Hi all,

Grace Cawley (nee Fisher) born 1834 possibly in Scotland, died 1890 in New Zealand. (My gggGrandmother)

I have found some information but dont know how accurate it is.

William (1806) and Dinah Cawley (1800) (nee Harvey) of Bardwell
Children:
John b: 1826
Edward b: 1830

Susan b: 1833
Dinah b: 1834
William b: 1837
Caroline b: 1838
Cecelia b: 1840

Does anyone have any further information??? Am I on the right track??

Know for Grace, I have no information what so ever.

If anyone can help, that would be fantastic.

Thanks
John

When, and where, did William and Grace marry?
When did they arrive in NZ? Have you looked at the immigration records?

1851 census (HO107/1791/516/7 - look it up on FreeCen) shows in Bardwell:

CAWLEY, William  Head  M  44  Brick Layer Journeyman  b Hepworth, Suffolk
CAWLEY, Dinah  Wife  F  50  b Bardwell, Suffolk
CAWLEY, Edward  Son  M  21  Ag Lab  b Troston, Suffolk
CAWLEY, William  Son  M  14  Ag Lab  b Bardwell
CAWLEY, Caroline  Daughter  F  13  "At home"  b Bardwell
CAWLEY, Ceccilia  Daughter  F  10  Scolar  b Bardwell

The information you gave appears to match the 1841 census, reference HO107/1013/13/18, except there is (of course!) no mention of Harvey.

Hi and thanks for the quick reply.

Grace Fisher arrived in New Zealand about 1858 on a boat called the "Three Bells" this is from a record written in a family bible somewhere. I dont know how or where to begin to search for passenger lists.

Another note in a family journal states Grace was the Step daughter of a John Chisholm and daughter of Jean Fisher. But have no information other than that.

I dont have any idea when William Cawley arrived in New Zealand, but he and Grace married August 17, 1865 in Dunedin, New Zealand.

I also know William and Grace bought a farm in New Zealand and I have all the family history in NZ.

Sorry, I should have mentioned this all earlier.

Any further pointers as to where to look would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
John

Sorry - I don't know anything about NZ records! Check the New Zealand forum here on Rootschat - there are bound to be pointers.

I would think that, if you can find William on passenger lists, there will be some details there.
It looks as if William travelled to NZ between 1851 and 1861 - as he is on the England 1851 census, but not on the 1861 census.

If Grace was born in Scotland, you will probably need to post in the Scotland forum - the records are quite distinct from those of England & Wales, and will need somebody with access to Scotlands People to look for you.

There is an 1851 Scotland census report of Grace Fisher:

John Chisholm  31
Jean Chisholm  43
Grace Fisher  17
4 Chisholm children

Grace born in Portmoak, Scotlandwell, Kinross

John

Do you have Grace's NZ death certificate. It should name her parents, where she was born and also how long she was in NZ.

William's death cert should also give the same info for him. Might help to narrow down when he arrived.

Familysearch has some info. William was baptised 26 Feb 1837. William CAWLEY married Dinah HARVEY 11 Apr 1826 at Troston, Suffolk. There is also a Tree on Ancestral File on Familysearch for the CAWLEY and HARVEY families as well.

Also, from 1841 Scotland census:

John Chisholm  M  20 Not born in county
Jean Chisholm  F  30  Born in County
Christian Fisher  F  8  Born in county
Grizel Fisher  F  7  Born in County
Alexander Chisholm  M  1  Born in County

All at Scotlandwell, Portmoak, Kinross-shire.

Looks like Grace was baptised Grizel?!

Familysearch has a baptism of a Grizell FISHER at Portmoak, Kinross on 23 May 1833, parents James FISHER and Jean FISHER.

James FISHER married Jean FISHER at Portmoak, 10 Apr 1830. There was an older Michael as well as the Christian. James possible son of Michael FISHER and Grizel HERDMAN, born 1794 at Portmoak.
