Maldon, Kent
« on: Sunday 02 January 11 20:39 GMT (UK) »
This is given as the birthdate of my ancestor James Hodge in the 1861 census, but I can't find any other evidence for its existence. Is it a mistake for Maldon, Essex, or could there have been a Maldon in Kent at some time - or is a place with a similar name meant? If so, what might it be?

This isn't the only strange thing about the entry, since James' age is given as 32, whereas he'd mysteriously become 44 when he died in 1864. I don't know what else might be wrong!

There is a Marden in Kent.

Have you found James in other census to see what he gives as his place of birth?

Hi  vardatintalle  :)
Its probably Malling Kent. The Enumerators transcribed the scrawled notes taken on the doorstep onto the Census form later so ling could easily become don .There are loads of Hodge,s there including a James circa right age group shown on 1841 census ,

Is it this family in 1861?  I only ask because the father's name looks like Jno (Jonathan or John) to me?

1861 - Front Wall, Sittingbourne, Kent

Jno (John?) HODGES head mar 30? b.Malden Kent
Sarah wife 27 b.Boughton Kent
George son 4 b.Boughton Kent

RG9/529 folio 129 page 5
.....................

When/where do the mother and son next turn up to try and help identify them?

Yes, the James in Crickhowell is my ancestor. He and Maria Davies later married (apparently - I only have their word for it). I'm descended from their son Edward Charles born in 1862.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find James in the 1841 or 1851 censuses.

Malling is a possibility, although the only James I can find was born in about 1840, which I wouldn't exactly call the right age group.

Thank you so much for finding that marriage! I must have overlooked it because it was in the wrong part of Wales - what on earth were James and Maria doing in Abergavenney?

Anyway, now at least I can see James' father on the certificate. It could be a breakthrough...

I always thought only adults' ages were rounded?
