James Prudhoe was baptised February 25th 1816 at Chester le Street. His Parents were George and Elizabeth Prudhoe.
I have found him in the 1841 census living in Hartlepool with the Emmerson family.
In the 1851 census he is living at Frindsbury, Kent with his wife Mariam, his niece and two workers from his pub.
After this i can find no trace of him or his wife. Any information as to what may have happened to him would be very welcome. Thank you.

i have had a quick look on A* & can't find them on 1861/71. there seem to be a lot of mis transcriptions of the Proudhoe name. do you have the names of any children?

Hello Diddymiller, thank you for your reply and efforts.
IŽm afraid that as far as iŽm aware up until 1851 James and Mariam had no legitimate children. As you said the name Prudhoe seemed to mis transcribed often and i have tried with various alternatives without any luck. I have searched deaths also without any luck and iŽm beginning to think they may have emigrated but to where i have no idea !
I am still trying to piece together the rest of JamesŽs  family so there may a clue somewhere in there. James and the Prudhoes are a new line for me to research as he just came into the picture as the named father on a birth certificate of the 1841 birth of the person who i think was my Great x2 Grandfather. Finding him was a four year brickwall and he is no sooner found and he disappears again !

Not sure if this of any help, but criminal records on Ancestry show a James Prudhoe convicted at Lancaster Quarter Sessions on 19 March 1875 of "larceny from the person before convicted of felony".  He was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment.  I am wondering if the "before convicted of felony" might indicate an earlier prison sentence.

Hello Greensleeves, thank you for your reply and efforts. IŽm also not sure if this is the same person, is there any indication as to age ?
The James i am looking for does seem to have been a "colourful" character with many facets so i would not be surprised at all if it was him !
I have received some information from a Rootschatter ( :) thanks P )about James Prudhoe for when he was in Kent and it seems he was there by the summer of 1846 and had metamorphosed from being a Platelayer to an Inspector of works on the railways ! Then in 1850 he was applying for a license for a pub in  Frindsbury which was initially refused but granted in 1851.
Then he disappears again !

A burial on FamilySearch. May be your man, given age and occupation.

James Prudhoe, died 29 Nov 1857, buried 30 Nov 1858 (one of these must be wrong). Birdwan, Bengal, India. Inspector of Platelaying, age 41.

Hello Alan,
Apart from WOW.. i donŽt really know what to say !
I think given his name, age and occupation this could well be him. How on earth did you find him in India of all places ?
I will try and follow this through and if i get an answer iŽll let you know if it is correct.
Thank you to all Rootschatters for the incredibly quick and useful help on this and special thanks to Alan.
A slightly stunned and grateful

Alan you are a star  8)
Thank you so much for your time and efforts. Your information i think will help me tremendously. After being stuck for four years at my Great x 2 Grandfather we got a breakthrough three weeks ago by identifying his mother and birth and from that obtained a birth certificate which led to James Prudhoe.
If this is the James that you have found who i have been looking for then i can finish this line of research and move onto the new families which have come from the birth certificate.
What a great start to the new year. Cheers and good luck in your own research.
