Missing from 1911 census of Canada
« on: Saturday 01 January 11 15:21 GMT (UK) »
I am looking in vain for sisters Mary Ann and Grace Ellen Norwell in the 1911 Census of Canada.  They were born in Scotland in 1886 and 1889 respectively, but moved to England in the mid 1890s.  Records show that they emigrated to Canada in early 1911, on 1st March 1911, they sailed from Liverpool on the Lake Champlain bound for St John, New Brunswick.  They arrived on 13th March, declaring that they intended to follow the trade of feather curling in Canada, working for a dyeing and cleaning business.  By the time of the census, they were probably in Toronto, as Mary Ann married there in late 1911.

I have searched the 1911 Census of Canada, via Ancestry, for Norwell and variants thereof, but there are no records of either sister.  Why might this be?

Elaine
Names: Fraser; Drummond; Kelledy; McColl (MacColl); Norwell; Ryan; Stalker

Hello DrElaine

I see that Grace Ellen Norwell married Peter Edward Luck in the City of Toronto, County of York, on January 23, 1913.

Peter Edward Luck, age 30, Bachelor, Labourer, Catholic, son of Christopher Luck (deceased) and Anna Edwards.

Grace Ellen Norwell, age 23, Spinster, Feather Curler, Catholic, daughter of John Thadeus Norwell, Dyer, and Isabella Ramsay.

Witnesses were Elizabeth L. Norwell, 788 Yonge St., and H.P. Turpin, 7 Northview Terrace.  Was Elizabeth another sister?

They may have been in transit at the time of the census and were missed.

Do you have the name of the person that Mary Ann married and the address. that could narrow down the search on the census for variant spelling of the name.

is a good source for looking at census info especially if you need to look for alternate spellings and places.

Agree they must have been on the move at the time of the census...They had not arrived before the directory information was taken for the 1912 issue ( Not sure when it was compiled as it was issued Jan 1912 http://www.archive.org/stream/torontodirec191200midiuoft#page/1080/mode/2up although they might not have been working yet and so not shown up in the surname section...
Not showing in following year...http://www.archive.org/stream/torontodirec191300midiuoft#page/n1147/mode/2up
although you can search for Robert if you find out the occupation from the marriage...a Peter rooms 143 Simcoe

Please keep the searches for a family already mentioned to one thread...here is another for the full family. I thought they sounded familiar, should have looked. You have an answer as well... Please use the search above to find a thread... put surname & your username in the blanks
