Rodgers and Keenan of Barrow In Furness
« on: Thursday 30 December 10 16:43 GMT (UK) »
Could someone kindly do a search of the  1901 or 1891 census for Rodgers or Keenan of Barrow. James Rodgers married Mary Ann Keenan in 1880. Their children were James, John, Francis, Mary ,and Rose. By 1901 they had a James Keenan living with them .He was Mary Ann Rodgers nephew.
Robert Keenan  married to Ann Burke in 1876. In 1881 they lived in Fisher St Barrow. Their Children were James, Robert ,Mary-Jane, Sarah-Ann ,Edward and John. I think their mother died in 1891 so the family broke up.
Through the little pieces of information I think Mary Rodgers took in some of the Keenan children.
Have been searching the Keenan line for many years now.
Any help very much appreciated
Eileen

I have been having a look round to see if I can help you - my family proved very elusive for years!

I did find some information - you may have already found these and discounted them but here goes:

Death for Sarah Ann Keenan in 1888, Barrow, Q4, 8e 591 (estimated year of birth 1877)
1891 Census: Robert Keenan aged 12 was under detention at the Stockport Boys Industrial School shown as a School Tailor
1891 Census: James Keenan aged 9 was under detention at the Stockport Boys Industrial School no occupation shown.

I also found a death of Robert Keenan 1900, Manchester, Q3, 8d 201 (estimated year of birth 1880).

I then saw a James Keenan in 1901 living at 25 Franklin Street, Barrow which I have taken to be your relative living with the Rodgers.

I found it interesting your family lived in Franklin Street, when I did some investigation with my sister-in-law into her family they lived on Franklin Street in Barrow what a small world.

I have not found any of the others but I will keep looking and if I come across anything will add a post. It may be that when their mother died they went to Manchester.
Lancashire: Croft, Hulston, Smith
Devon & Hampshire: Thorne, Cuthbert
Staffordshire & Warwickshire: Gadd

Hello and thank you for the reply.

I think the Sarah Ann is correct. She did not appear on the 1891 census. I found Robert and James in Stockport . Robert went to the Boar war in 1899 and James was his next of Kin.He states his father Robert could not be found. Robert settled in Belfast. James was in Franklin St 1901.
I found Robert Keenan senior and 3 more children in Fisher St 1891. He is classed as married but there is no sign of Ann/Annie Keenan, his wife. By 1901 no sign of Robert Senior and 3 children.
One sibling, Edward eventually went to Canada and kept in touch with our family in Ireland. He named Robert his brother as next of kin and gave Belfast as the address. I would like to know what happened to Jennie(Mary Jane) and John.
I very much believe in a small world as I am sure Franklin St was not very big.

Again thanks as it can be a bit of a struggle.
Eileen
