Albert Sachs studio, Bradford c1880
« on: Thursday 30 December 10 14:59 GMT (UK) »
Would anyone have photos taken at the Albert Sachs studio in Bradford in late 19thC? I have several photos which are not dated, but numbered. I'm wondering if anyone has both a numbered and dated photo in their collection which would help me date my photos.

Hello Wayne
There were 1000's of studios in the UK at that time.the chances are slim you will find someone
with photos from this studio that are close in number to yours & that have been dated as well.
My advise would be to scan them back & front at a reasonable dpi (2-300) include all of the card
plus the edges.Start a new topic for each one & give them a unique name as filenames are stored
on here.
We will then take a look & try & date them for you.
We're looking for something that looks like this:

Hi Wayne

The Albert Sachs studio operated in Bradford from 1873 til about 1922. Albert Sachs died in 1886 and the studio was most probably continued by his brother Oscar. I have a number of photos taken at the studio some numbered some not. The studio operated from the following addresses which may help date your photos. 1873-1877 151 Westgate, 1877-1881 20 Manningham Lane, 1881 20 North Parade, 1881-1889 1 Manor Street, 1883-1922 8 Manningham Lane. As I am researching the studio just now I would be interested in the numbers you have and the associated card design.

Hi

If the other two backs are as this design then my best estimate for these is
17693 and 21026 between 1883-1886
42116 about 1893-94
This design was used when Albert Sachs had a studio at 8 Manningham Lane Bradford

Thanks for the feedback, Steve. Yes, all photos had the same design on the reverse side.

Could you give me an opinion on another photo, from the Hubert Henry studio, also in Manningham? The reverse is in black, no serial number on the photo. I'm guessing it dates from after 1900.

Hi

According to the RPS Photo Historian supplement Hubert Henry operated from 140 Manningham Lane from 1897 - 1908. He appears in the 1901 census living at 140a with his wife and daughter. The 1911 census shows another photographer Arthur Pain at this address.

He appears in the Byles 1898 and 1900 directory at 140 Manningham Lane.
