Carter Family Chipping Sodbury
« on: Thursday 30 December 10 13:22 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking into the Carter family of Chipping Sodbury.
James Carter married Hannah Milsom and lived in Chipping sodbury high street.
He died in 1886 and Hannah later remarried to a Samuel Stiff.
James Carter had a son Alfred Carter who around 1898 became landlord of the Boot inn on Horse street Chipping sodbury. Alfred had a daughter Florence Carter. I was hoping someone on here would happen to know any more information on the Carter family?
James is buried in St Johns church yard just off the main high street in Sodbury.
Hannah died in 1903 and despite having remarried she was buried with James her first husband.

Many thanks for anyone who reads this.

Adam

Adam,

Welcome to the best place there is. :)

Searching for Carter baptisms at Chip. Sod. via http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountryEngland.htm gives nothing, so it seems the family came from elsewhere.

In order to be certain of ones facts it is adviseable to obtain birth and marriage certificates but after looking at James Carter GLS marriages post 1837 in freebmd ( http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl ), you may need some aspirin  :D

I dare say you will be given info. from censuses - my wife has an Ancestry account but her computer is so slow :'(

Regards

Chas

Dear Adam,
While I cannot add much to help with your CARTER research, you may like to contact me as we may be connected through the STUMP & WATTS families. I have a lot more information on those names.
Best wishes, Carole

Do you by now have the census entries for your James Carter?  They suggest that he was born in South Cerney.  In 1841 he was living in a household which suggests his mother was called Jemima and that he had at least two siblings, Elizabeth and John.
All inhabitants of Axbridge, Somerset.

Hello,
Yes my family have connections with the Watts family too.
My great grandfather was Alfred Stump of chipping sodbury.
He died in 1989.
One of his daughters Married Sid Watts.

Does any of this ring a bell?

Cheers
