Looking for UK families
« on: Thursday 30 December 10 05:15 GMT (UK) »
I am a first time use today. I have been doing family research on and off for ages. It has been a slow process. I would be interested in anyone else has been looking for the following family names. Most are from Worcestershire (Dudley area) or Ross-on-Wye and Hereford, although one FOOTITT originates, I believe in Lincolnshire or Nottinghamshire.

Family names are RUSTON (Ros and Dudley), FOOTITT (Ross, Hereford & Spalding), BANNISTER (Balsall Heath, Dudley and Stourbridge), WOOD (Ross and Upton Bishop), SECKERSON (Dudley), SALT (Dudley), SL(E)IGHT (Upton in Notts), MOR(E)TON (Ledbury and Ross), TURLEY (Dudley).

Any snippets would be useful.

Many thanks

Steve Ruston in a very sunny and hot Sydney, Oz

Hi Steve and welcome to Rootschat!

I have found some Footitts in Ross in the 1861 census, although it was actually mistranscribed as 'Fritch'.  Someone has obviously contacted Ancestry and pointed out the error as it now gives 'Footitt' as an alternative name.  The reference for the Census entry is RG9 - Piece 1813, Folio 28 p. 9.  I am sorry but I can't read the entire entry but here is what I can read:

Ross, Herefordshire
George Footit, 33,  (can't read occupation)  born Spalding, Lincs
Mary Footit, 28, born Nottinghamshire
William Footit, 9, born Newark, Notts
Ann Footit, 9, born Newark
George Footit, 6, born Newark
Thomas Footit, 4, born Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire
Samuel Footit, 2, born Ross
Hattie 6 months, born Ross

Are these any help?

Many thanks, GS.  I have been working my way through the varous censuses, but don't think I had this one. It helps me pin down the time when George and family came to Ross.

Thanks again.

Steve

And here is son William in 1881 at Alpine Terrace, Ross:

William Footitt, 29, Commercial Traveller, b. Newark, Notts
Hannah Footitt, 35, b. Gloster (sic), Kingswood
William H Footitt, 3, Hereford, Ross
Ann Footitt, sister, 27, Rosstone, Notts
Kate Hook, 16, milliners apprentice, b. Gloster (sic) Kingswood

RG11 Piece 2585 Fol 23 p 41

I suspect that Kate Hook is related to Hannah (might be a younger sister) as her birthplace is the same as Hannah's.

Thanks, again. I had the 1881 census details, so knew that they were at Bridstow Villas in that year. They obviously moved around, Spalding, Newark. Tewkesbury, Ross.  I think Ann's birthplace might be a mis-reading of Rollestone in Notts where some of the Footitt and Slight (George's wife's maiden name) families came from.

I'll keep digging. It is a fascinating pastime, but one which requires a lot of time. Unfortunately, my family were never interested in their history and both my parents and their many brothers and sisters have now died and none my cousins have much background information either.

Cheers

Steve

Welcome Steve.

The best way for you to progress is to ask specific questions on the appropriate board about each  individual family.  Tell us what you already know and where you are stuck.

Then we can all get searching for you.

I'm sure your research will progress in leaps and bounds with rootschatter's help.  ;)
