I am looking for an Edmund Galley born c1798-1812. He was quite famous as the convict who received compensation and a royal pardon 44 years after he was transported to Australia. At his trial in Devon 1836 he said he was 26 and born Kingston. When he received his pardon in 1879 he was 80, so I don't know his DOB.
Hi Judy,
Hope some of these entries might help confirm that Edmund Galley was born about 1812 rather than between about 1798 and 1812. It is useful to establish this because some baptisms can be "late baptisms" where the person being baptised was not of infant age.
Establishing the year of birth:
Home Office: Convict Prison Hulks: Registers and Letter Books, collection dated 1802-1849
Edmund Galley (who may have been misindexed as Gully), was shown to be aged 24, which would have meant he was born about 1812. His date of conviction was shown as 23 Jul 1836 and the place of his conviction was Exeter.
Date Received was 10 Sep 1836 and the Ship was the Ganymede, which was moored at Woolwich and Devonport
Australian Convict Index, collection for years 1788-1868
showed Edmund Galley was aged 26 in the year 1839 and his birthplace was entered as Kingston Upon Thames, and his occupation was Brickmaker.
The state he was sent to was Nsw and the ship was the Parkfield.
The approximate year of birth being about 1812 also tallies in with his entry in England and Wales Criminal Registers for years 1791 to 1892, as does his trial date and location.
