Griffith's Valuation - Meenreagh

Can I please have opinions of what this would mean in the Griffith's Valuation please?

I'm looking at the surname of GALLAN, Wm and Patrick in the Co. Donegal, Barony: Raphoe, South, Union: Stranorlar, Parish: Donaghmore and Townland: Meenreagh.

These two in particular have (Burn) after their names. I know that sometimes their mother's christian names were recorded to differentiate between families with the same names (as in an Agnomen)...would this mean their mother's surname (?) would be BURN (BYRNE?)

The name in brackets is usually a family nickname when there are several people with the same names in the same townland. If you look at other entries on the pages you'll see (Big) next to Daniel Gallan, etc.

Don't know if this helps with your specific enquiry but, I was of the understanding that names included in brackets that were not followed by the word "and" generally referred to either parent's or spouse's names.  As this differentiated between individuals with same first and last names.

Also, in some instances the occupation or family trade, the name of the family dwelling, skills associated with the individual, religious affiliation, or physical or moral characteristics of the individual or that person's ancestors.

That's just about Griffith's Valuation (plenty other similar articles like it online) but does not explain the query on this thread about name in brackets on printed valuation page.

Thanks for differing opinions!

I know that one branch of the GALLENs (John) married Margaret BYRNE, and came out to Australia mid 1800's..but I don't believe it to be 'this' lot from Meenreagh. I'll keep scratching away..

I guess Big Daniel GALLAN never got to see his entry there! Could have been worse I guess

I just came across your post. My mothers' sister married a Gallen from Meenagoland which is beside Meenreagh. I know a little about that strand of the family as they would be related by marriage if thats any help to you drop me a line.
