Turkey - Greek Orthodox
« on: Sunday 26 December 10 13:28 GMT (UK) »
My friend is thinking about researching his family tree.  His mother and father, along with him and his brother moved to the States in the 1960s.  He is Greek Orthodox and the family came from Turkey.

Can anyone give me some advice or helpful tips to get him started please?  How would he go about trying to trace records of his grandparents for example?

Hi

I undertake Greek research professionally and I can tell you it will be tricky to try to get records out of Turkey. However, some Greek church and civil registers were removed to Athens in the aftermath of the collapse of the Megali Idea and the great popluation exchange in 1922/23.

Where did they come from in Turkey? Post-WW2 the Greek population in Turkey was pretty much restricted to Constantinople/Istanbul, Imbros and Tenedos.

With a little more information, I could perhaps give you a better idea of the possibilities.

Also don't forget around the turn of the 20th century and prior a lot of coastal towns like Izmir (then known as Smyrna) had large populations of Greeks as opposed to now.

Hello, as a Turkish(a translator at that), I may help in cases that require knowledge of the Turkish.
Just give me a few pointers, like how much you were able to learn, etc.
Good luck on your search.

post a surname of your research ,and lets see what we can come up with ??
years of birth
place of birth
spouse / children - the more details you post - the bigger the chance of finding a possible contact ??

for instance - just put a surname in here and see if you get any hits - if you do - post the info and we will put our heads together and see what we can find  :)
