Corston. BENNETT
« on: Saturday 25 December 10 01:49 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for the birth of MARY BENNETT born circa 1784 in Corston (Somerset).  I have her in the 1851 census age 67 living with her husband William Millard age 72 and one son, but can not find her birth anyway.  Many thanks for any information.

Hi jcurious,

Someone else may come up with her Christening for you but I checked FreeREG which has Bennetts Christened in Corston.
Unfortunately there seems to be a gap in the transcribed Records for when Mary would have been Christened. It may be worth keeping an eye on FreeREG as new Records are being added all the time by Volunteers.
www.freereg.org.uk

1841 Census there are Children Ann born c 1816 and William born c 1826.
The Marriage of Mary Bennett and William Millard is on Freereg but no additional details are shown.

Trish :)

Hi Trish1120 :) Thankyou for looking.  I didn't realise that there was a gap in the freeBMD which is helpful to know.  I'll keep looking.  I appreciate your help.  Thanks

Hi jcurious,

AFAICS there's no obvious gap in the Corston registers, several baptisms in 1784 and each nearby year, including some Bennetts but no Mary. However, I notice Mary married William Millard in Newton St. Loe and was described as otp. The Newton registers for that period have not been transcribed for FreeREG yet, but are "in progress". The parishes are adjacent so she may even have been born in Corston parish but batised at Newton St. Loe.

David

:)Wow thanks David.  That was very helpful as I hadn't thought that the baptism might have been in a different place.  I'm in Australia and don't always realise how close some of these places are to each other, even looking at a map doesn't always help, so thanks again.  Have a Happy New Year.    Janet

Hello again Janet

I had a chance to look at the transcriptions of the Newton St. Loe registers in Bath library today. The bad news is there was no sign of Mary Bennett (1760 - 1812)

The good news is there is more detail of Mary's wedding than shown on FreeREG.

23 Jan 1811  Newton St. Loe
Willaim Millard, bachelor and Mary Bennett, spinster (marked)
Witnesses: John Bennett, Phebe Bennett. By Banns.

There was only one other Bennett marriage:

20 Apr 1784 Newton St. Loe
John Bennett, bachelor of Corston and Susanna Pratten, spinster
Witnesses: Thos. Russell, Thos. Pratten. By Banns

Looking at the Corston registers it looks likely that John was the son of Walter and Rachel, baptised in 1758. He had a sister, an aunt and a grandmother all called Phebe. There must be a good chance that your Mary is from the same family. Hard to prove without the baptism though.

David

Thanks David - how very kind of you to go to all that trouble - it's much appreciated.  As you say, it's a bit difficult to prove without a baptism record, my ancestors seem to have a way of hiding themselves.  I did think that Phebe was a rather unusual name - oh well the hunt continues ..... thanks again    Janet
