Toby was a second-cousin of my father-in-law, so fairly distant. But the family has a photo of him as a young man ..
when I started on OH's family history, the various photos of unknown relatives piqued my curiosity, and I decided to follow him because of his unusual name. Indeed, it has uncovered several other second cousins, descended from Toby's uncles and aunts.
I'm still in touch with that grandson - he was just starting on the family, so I was able to give him Toby's ancestors, and he brought me a bit uptodate with more recent stuff. But I think neither of us knows much about the years 1917-1930.
I don't suppose OH would be a near enough relative to satisfy the Dept of defence (and I suppose I'd feel I was prying, as there are direct descendants)
