I am also trying to find family info on my father's side, and subsribed to ancestry.com.  Not much was available re my paternal grandparents, and not very clued up about the best way to start this process.  My daughter is also keen to find out more about her Irish ancestry.

It is confusing when you start on a new bulletin board - but people here are very friendly and helpful. I just thought it was better for us not to get entangled in the search for the Mathews.

Now you have 3 posts, so I can send you a personal message.

If you look under "Ireland Resources" the first two topics will tell you a lot about Irish records - have a browse through them, and glance at some of the other topics.
There are several Breslin cousins out there who have information on Toby and his siblings and parents. I don't know much about his wife Agnes.

For your father's side of the family, I'd start a different topic, when you're ready.

I know a little
He fought in the 1916 rising in Boland's flour mill and was interned. He fought on in the war of independence and civil war.

You might have cottoned on to the census but maybe not if you're computer shy.

thanks for that - I've the censuses, tho'  Marty probably hasn't seen them yet.

Marty and I have exchanged a few PMs before Christmas.

I have a fair amount of genealogical stuff on Toby Breslin - family background, birth, marriage, children, death, grave (it's an easy name to follow!).

What I don't have is much on his fighting, internment etc. I know he was in Boland's Mill, and interned in Frongoch and Wakefield from an old thread on this board. Christopher R.I.P. recommended a book on Frongoch which bore this out.
I didn't follow up on Wakefield yet.
I've nothing at all on him during the War of Independence and Civil War. If you've anything on this it would be very useful.

The next bit I have is when he 's a City Councillor and Peace Commissioner in the 1930s

Hi I know a grandson which I think visited rootschat before.
I think that his information is limited too. It's crying out for someone to apply for the pension from dept of defence. That takes forever though and I think you have to be a fairly direct relative.
Sorry I've nothing more but here's something that was in the St. Lawrence O'Toole centenary book.

Toby was a second-cousin of my father-in-law, so fairly distant. But the family has a photo of him as a young man ..

 when I started on OH's family history, the various photos of unknown relatives piqued my curiosity, and I decided to follow him because of his unusual name. Indeed, it has uncovered several other second cousins, descended from Toby's uncles and aunts.

I'm still in touch with that grandson - he was just starting on the family, so I was able to give him Toby's ancestors, and he brought me a bit uptodate with more recent stuff. But I think neither of us knows much about the years 1917-1930.

I don't suppose OH would be a near enough relative to satisfy the Dept of defence (and I suppose I'd feel I was prying, as there are direct descendants)

I don't know if yous will see this as your posts were written so long ago but I came across this forum when I was searching for information on Toby. I'm a direct descendant of Toby - his great granddaughter and have been interested to learn about his amazing life.
I wonder have you guys seen this picture of him?
