There are stones in Abbotshall & Bennochy & Kirkcaldy Church pre 1855
Let me know who your looking for and I will check the index
Both names if possible

These are the only COUPER stones in Abbotshall

Erected by Margaret Brown to her Husband
326      Capt. William Couper born 20.3.1838 died Feb 1902
son James born Sept. 1861 died March 1870
William Born April 1871 died 1874
Above Margaret Brown died 12.5.1903 age 63

[snip]

Norrie,
Thanks!  Apologies for the delay in replying, I literally only just spotted this reply:-(

Capt. William Couper is gg-grandfather's brother and somewhere there is a letter by him written in Rawalpindi in 1861.  He joined the 93rd Sutherland Highlanders in 1852 (claiming he was 17!) and I believe he was at Balaclava . . .

I had assumed he had stayed in India as he transferred to a "native" regiment for a promotion to Sergeant but I didn't follow his records after the transfer.

If you have an image of his gravestone that would be fantastic!

Norrie,

I had most of the information but there were a few nuggets that I will follow up.

Two items that items that have always made me wonder  and I have not been successful in investigating have been:
1) The parents of Ann Grant who married William Smart. All I have been able to determine is that their possible names were John Grant and Eliza and possibly lived in Banffshire, Scotland. No information on siblings or parents. Their daughter was Margaret Smart.
2) Donald G. Smart (Son of David Smart and Margaret Smart) born 1890 (Landsend, Falkland, Fife), out of wedlock. Who was he real father (Brodie has been named, an irishman). I have not been able to establish the Brodie's living near Margret. I have Donald traced to Kirkcaldy in 1911 but he does not show up anywhere until he goes to Australia, then to Canada where he married Lillian Andrews and his bother (John aka Jack) marries Lillian's sister. Lillian's family settled in Kerrobert, Saskatchewan, Canada. Once Donald and Lillian married they moved to Bruderhiem, Alberta, Canada. Donald passed away in Ft. Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada in the 1970's. I have him entering Canada three times between 1912 and 1915. I am trying to find any information regarding Donald between 1902 and 1912. I have him leaving Cape Town to Australia. He was supposed to have worked his way around by working on ships.

If you have any information regarding these two quandries i would appreciate the assistance.

That said thank you very much for the time and effort that have you spent already.

Hi Norrie,

I'm very impressed with all this hard work you are putting in for family researchers., it really is fantastic. I was wondering if you have come across any of my ancestors in these cemeteries -

George Smart 1790 - 1863 and his wife Margaret Shand who died in 1844 (bit uncertain about birth date, between 1802 - 1806) Their son David Smart and his family have an impressive headstone in Dysart Cemetery, I thought they could also be buried nearby.

I was also looking for John Allan 1821 - 1906 and his wife Helen Penman 1828 - 1908. They had at least 13 children and always lived in Dysart.

Thanks,

Michael

Norrie,

Looked from the maternal and paternal naming sequencing of the Smart family and James/Peter/Alexander/Elspet do not show up in at all. This is in my line and those of the siblings.

John Farmer is a hit, confirmed what pieces of information I was putting together.

Again hats off to you!!

Joe
