NIXON family origins
« on: Wednesday 13 April 05 21:41 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,
I have been researching a Nixon family of Middlewich. Peter Bennet cleverly found them in 1851 for a distant relative of mine (hi Bagheera!), which says the head of the family was born in Chester in 1811 or thereabouts.
Recently while researching  another of my lines, I came across a site called www.reivers.com where I learned that the Nixons were one of the families that ravaged the borders between England and Scotland during the 15th and 16th centuries.
I wondered whether any other Nixon researcher had been able to trace their family further back than the beginning of the 19th century, and if so were they still in Cheshire? Or is there any sign of movement south from the border areas?
                                         Any comments welcomed

Thanks for your thoughts, mishcat. There seems to have been a lot of to-ing and fro-ing of populations between Ireland and Scotland, so it's difficult to sort out what came first!
I am no further on with my Nixon family than I was when I began this thread, so if anyone else has any comments I would be glad to hear them.

Hi,  My G/grandfather was Oswald NIXON but he was born in Dodworth, Barnsley in abt 1839.  His daughter, my grandmother went to Hyde Cheshire in about 1890 and her married name was ROYDES.  Her brother George went to America in the early 1900's.  There are still a few of the family in Hyde.

Thanks for your contribution, Brian. Your Nixon family seems to have moved to Cheshire much later than my group, so it doesn't look like a connection. Unless your Oswald's parents moved to Barnsley from Cheshire of course.
With it being a borders name, the Nixons seem to have moved about all over the place.
                      Best wishes and good hunting

As a matter of interest my grand uncle George NIXON was incarcerrated in Carlisle in a juvenile place when he was 10 years old in 1881.  Probably for walking on some grass somewhere.  Carlisle is close to where the Reivers were and though no relation, it is just interesting.

Great to have this topic stirred up again. Celia, I don't know a Darren but my great grandfather had a brother named Daniel. both born Middlewich...
I am still trying to find any ancestors or same generation relatives of  John Nixon or Nickson, born Chester circa 1811. I have the story forwards, but with so little information I have spotted nothing likely for John's origins --the naming pattern doesn't seem to help as the family were non-conformists and most had bibilical names...
The Frodsham family ... maybe they could be found in 1851 with more details, thanks grtz, will check them out
