Hi, Marlene,

I have no information regarding the Dash family other than two who have married into the Freegard family, my ancestry, namely Mary Jane and Emily Hannah who I guess were sisters. These girls married Henry and John Edward Freegard respectively. Not much help I know.

Kind regards, David

PS. I have sent you a PM on the subject.

Hi Marlene,

Replying to the christening record you have found not sure if you asked me this before.
Upon reflection of christenings they do not have to match birth dates so for example i know of Freegard family from 1700s the christenings could be 1-5 years after their actual birth date.
It is possible Mary Jane Dash was born 1855-1857 and was Christened in 1860 with mother Elizabeth Dash.
I see that the record she was in the work house so may be Mary Jane Dash never had a father?
I do not find any record with Dark so i can assume it is Dash only.
Mary Jane Dash the only record that can possibly match is the 1855 record from Malmesbury 5a 42, this is 2 years out but i have a feeling that we need to order the Birth certificate for this record to find out if Elizabeth is the mother.
It is also possible the records from freebmd have not been updated and a record of 1857-1858 Mary Jane Dash has not been transcribed yet.
All of the above are possible but the only one that we can confirm would be ordering the birth record from 1855 of Mary Jane Dash Malmesbury district.

Thanks Alan

Hi Marlene et al,

I've researched my hubby David's Freegard family.. his great-great-grandparents were John Freegard (1848-1903) and Katharine Freeth (1847-1922). Their daughter Alice Maud Freegard (1877-1975) was his great-grandmother. I didn't know their son Garnet migrated to Australia as well, so thanks for that info. Alice married William Charles Weeks (1878-1949) in 1899, they migrated to Australia c1900 and lived at Taabinga, near Kingaroy, in Queensland. Alice died and was buried there, William died and was buried in Brisbane.

I've attached a photo of John and Katharine's headstone in St Martin's churchyard, Bremhill, Wiltshire. Also attached is that of John's parents' Thomas Freegard (c1811-1879) and Margaret (c1817-1856) (nee Matthews), John's grandfather John Freegard (1764-1837), and great-great-grandmother Elizabeth Freegard (nee ??) (c1697-1767) and her son John (1727-1757) (modern text superimposed over faded inscription). John Freegard's inscription reads..

"Sacred to the memory of / JOHN FREEGARD / Who departed this life / 17th February 1837 aged / 73 years / Mourn not dear wife at my decease / hope with God is made in peace."

So my hubby's line is.. Alice Maud Freegard -> John Freegard & Katharine Freeth -> Thomas Freegard (c1811-1879) + Margaret Matthews (c1817-1856) -> John Freegard (1764-1837) + Elizabeth Wilkins (c1768-1859) -> James Freegard (1725-1799) + Susannah Hill (c1732-1794) -> George Freegard (c1699-1770) + Elizabeth ? (c1697-1767)  All the Freegard men from Bremhill, Wiltshire. Their wives: Katharine Freeth, born Burghclere, Hampshire; Margaret Matthews, born Tockenham, Wiltshire; Elizabeth Wilkins, born White Cleeve, Wiltshire; Susannah Hill, born Berwick St John, Wiltshire.

Hi, Rachel,

Thank you for this latest post and pics, really good of you to share.

So, your husband and I descend from George 1699 as many Freegard researchers do. He's a lot to answer for!! ;D

I see your David comes down from James b 1725 I descend from his brother Charles b 1735.

All the best, David

I am new to RootsChat.  I have registered because I have been following the various posts regarding the Freegard family in Australia, but with particular interest to the Bremhill origins.  I am related to the Bremhill Freegards through my mother.  Regarding Mary Jane Dash - I have obtained a copy of her death certificate.  This wasn't easy, but I took a plunge with a Fanny Freegard registration around the right time of her death.  At the time of death she was living at the family farm in Blunsdon.  Her son in law Henry Roberts (who married Frances Louise, my mother's Aunt Louie d. 1970 no offspring) registered the death.  Our theory (my mother's, my uncle's and mine) is that Mary Jane was called Fanny by her husband Henry, and it is possible that her children didn't know her real name (people not having been so open about personal matters of any sort in those days).  As Henry Freegard had died in 1909, and Louie didn't marry until 1919, it makes sense that Henry Roberts would not know any different at that stage.  Obviously it was sorted out before the headstone was produced, as grave of both Henry and Mary Jane Freegard can be seen in the cemetery at Blunsdon.

I hope this is of interest.

Regards

J Perkins

Thank you for your very interesting post, I'm as very pleased to hear that someone has found Mary's death Cert. My interest is through my husbands grandfather Albert Henry Freegard, son of Henry and Mary Jane.. Could you post details of Vol and page numbers for Mary's Cert as I'd like to order a copy. My last contact for Mary is 1911 Census where she was living with Albert Henry at Newlands Farm Blunsdon. I have never completely solved the problem of proving who Mary's parents were, but I am certain that her surname was Dash as its clearly written on my copy of Frances Louise's birth Cert.

Albert Henry must have left Blunsdon shortly after the Census was recorded as he arrived here in Western Australia 10th July 1911.

Regards Marlene

Hello, Marlene.

The details of the death registration for Mary Jane Freegard nee Dash: Vol 5a Page 7; Reg District Swindon; Inferred County Wiltshire; Oct - Dec qtr 1937.

Albert Henry Freegard married Mabel Lily Bampton on 26 May 1911 and left for Australia from London the next day on the Armadale.

My mother tells the tale of how she opened the front door one day and saw a man whom she thought was her father.  She wondered how he could be in the kitchen and at the front door at the same time, until he spoke and asked to see Arthur (Edgar Freegard my grandfather).  It was her uncle Albert on a visit from Australia.  Apparently, her parents took him into the front room (in the days when the front parlour was kept for Sundays and visitors only), and she never saw him again.  Apparently he invited any member(s) of the family who wanted to go and live with him in Australia, but Arthur and Mary Jane turned the offer down without consulting anyone else.  Mum often wonders what her life would have been like if she had gone!

There is a record on the UK Incoming Passenger Lists 1878-1960 of the arrival at Tilbury on 2 June 1938 of an A Freegard 56 farmer, travelling alone.  This tallies with Mum's story.

Regards

Jacqueline Perkins
