Found the 1885 Wreck Report for the 1873 built 'City of Manchester'
http://www.plimsoll.org/images/14905_tcm4-182066.pdf
The report indicates it was a cargo ship of 37 crew and 4 passengers on the fatal trip.

Now thinking that the 1878 and 1885 ship is the same one.. the "Burthen" of 686 Tons being it's cargo weight on arrival.

Hi Fleurieu,

You say that Mary Jane SYMONS only brought one son with her to Australia - was it her oldest son Eldred?  If so, then this may be his obituary (the age is right), and it says that he arrived on the Oriana in 1883.  There is a memorial in the following year from a brother "Tom".  If this is him, I think it likely that you will find your MUTTON family on the same ship.

:) :) Thanks for your most welcome informatiion.   Yes, that is indeed Eldred Symons.   I am not able to find the ships passengers for 1883, well not without going to either genealogy society office or mortlock library.   Nothing after 1860 available on internet that I can find.    This a great help, and my suspicions on the two families knowing each other in Cornwall grows stronger.   Thanks again.   If you know of a site which has later passenger lists for S.Aust, please let me know, I live a long way from the necessary offices.   Ta, Fleurieu

Hi Fleurieu,

I believe that not all immigration records are included in the SA State Records online search, and I think you should contact them directly to at least confirm whether or not a passenger list for the Oriana has survived.

http://143.216.32.39/archivessrsa/t1tbmain.asp   (Left menu - Searching -  Passenger list search - Learn about searching passenger lists)

There are contact details on their home page  http://www.archives.sa.gov.au/
