Mawd TUBERVILLE, b. abt. 1427, and Sir William HERBERT
« on: Wednesday 13 April 05 19:17 BST (UK) »
I am seeking the ancestry of Mawd TUBERVILLE, b. abt. 1427, of Llanfaircilgedin, Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, not md., but met Sir William HERBERT, b. abt. 1406; or 1398/1401 lived at Ragland Castle, Monmouthshire,  d. 27 Jul 1469 Banbury, Northamptonshire; bur. St. Mary's Priory Church, Abergavenny, Monmouthshire.
They were the parents of Richard HERBERT, b. abt. 1442, of Ragland, Monmouthshire, d. 12 Sep 1510, not md. but father of Thomas HERBERT, b. abt. 1482, of Abergavenny.
Did Sir William HERBERT, builder of Ragland Castle 1430,  m. Margaret ABRAHALL or was she the same person as Mawd TUBERVILLE?  I would like to find the the ancestors, their names, places, and dates of birth and death for Mawd TURBERVILLE.  I am also seeking more historical details for Sir William HERBERT.
Thank you for your assistance.

Some suggestions - you may already have these links, but there are lots of Herbert descendants out there apparently.

You may be best placed writing to

http://www.abergavennyhistory.co.uk/

or Abergavenny Museum, Castle St, Abergavenny - I've not got an email, but it should be easy to find.

I doubt the county Records office in Cwmbran would be much help at this stage.

I am a resident of Huntsville, Alabama (USA) and, believe it or not, a descendent of the Sir William Thomas Herbert/Ragland family.  My great uncle, Dwight Ragland, self-published two books, the first in 1980 and titled "History of a Ragland Family."  I do not yet have the second book.  In any event, in looking through the index of the names referenced in this book, I found no reference to Margaret Abrahall nor Mawd Tuberville.  Should you have any questions, please advise.  Johnna.

I believe that your Sir William is the William Herbert who was executed by Richard Neville Earl of Warwick after the Battle of Edgecote. Edgecote is near Banbury. William was a supporter of King Edward IV and Warwick was trying to take over the country. From 1469 to 1471, when Edward returned to England and won the Battle of Tewkesbury they fought several battles. I believe that William Herbert was unfortunately captured on his way back to Wales and executed. I am not sure about Maud Turbeville. Henry Tudor was his ward until he escaped to live in France. One of the Herberts married King Richard 111s illegitimate daughter Katherine.

Dont you mean the Raglan family, The descendants of Robert ap Ievan ap Thomas Gwllym Jenkin took the name Raglan, but were not a descendant of Sir William ap Thomas of Raglan whose descendants took the name Herbert. Sir William was an uncle to Robert ap Ievan.

Raglan is sometimes refered to as Ragland but in fact both are english corruptions of the correct Welsh name Rhag Lan.
