Glasgow burial- location of 'Old Churchyard'?
« on: Friday 17 December 10 11:58 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I have an ancestor, Gavin Scott, whose OPR burial record shows he was buried  in Glasgow 'Old churchyard'. Others listed on the page are 'St Mungo' or 'New', and I was wondering where this old churchyard would have been? I have a feeling this may relate to the Cathedral but I could be wrong as the information is pretty limited on the page and unfortunately I'm not very familiar with the area.

I am planning to visit (weather permitting!) this weekend and would love to see the sort of area my Gavin was buried in.

Many thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Hi Sophie,

I think the 'Old' Churchyard is the one immediately surrounding the Cathedral and that the New one (or St. Mungo's) is the one right at the back, right next to the Royal Infirmary and completely separate from the other.

I doubt if you'll be able to see much due to the snow - most of the stones surrounding the Cathedral are flat so will be covered.

Have a wee look here: http://www.memento-mori.co.uk/96.pdf

There's some photos of the 'New' Churchyard at the end of the index.

Thank you so much for your help Anne, that's brilliant. I was planning on visiting the Cathedral so at least I'll be able to see the place even if I can't find exactly where he is.

Have a very Merry Christmas!
