Jones - Welsh Romani
« on: Wednesday 15 December 10 00:41 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

So as I'm piecing information together, it's becoming more and more likely that my ancestry is Welsh Romani.... my great great grandmother was named Margaret Jones, she married another Jones whose first name I do not know. She was born in 1871 in Wales. She had very dark skin and reported travelled to America to avoid what she called "persecution."

Can anyone help me at all? I'm at a loss, but would love to know specifics...

hi. heather, jones is one of many,  old romany names. as you would think its got lots of connections with wales. in fact one of my aunts was wed to a jones. it is not widly known but in this country, and many european countries in the 16th and 17th century, it was illegal to be a gypsy, the punishment, if you were born was death.  burning, infantacide, and public flogging at the least? many were inprisoned. so you would try to keep your roots a secret. it still goes on to day, i can trace my family back to the 17th century, all travelling people. i lived a travelling life till recently, but now live in a house. but only a few months back i was refused entry to my local pub because of my gypsy roots. by the land lord who i had known for twenty years? but just found out i was a romany, any way it is not a surprise your ancestors left the country. you could pretend you were not a gypsy where no one knew you. in fact i often tell gorgios/ non travellers/ that its like we are a white black man. because we get the same or worse treatment. but it is the small mindeness of others that get to you, so i well understand why in the 19th century you would leave your mother country. to escape predudice, if i can help with any questions about romany life feel free to ask. cushti bok  rob..g

Yes Rob,sadly prejudice rears its ugly head everywhere it seems.

Whilst I have no known Romany ancestry myself my Great-Grandfather David Conway befriended the famous preacher Gypsy Smith in Hanley Staffordshire in the 1880s.My own mother learnt on her Grandfather's knee that he never met a finer man.

Rob, I am so sorry for the ignorance of some people,  I found out a few years ago that my family were of the travelling people.   And I am proud to be a descendant of such a proud family orientated and hard working people, Who dont claim benefits as much as house dwellers.

I myself have always lived in a house but my gr grandparents travelled the roads, once side living in vans and the other living in tents.

Both families worked hard ,  and for my granny nobody could  have been as clean as her,her house was spotless.

So for these people who are so ignorant,to hell with them, they have nothing to be proud of.

Hi William,
I get so angry about the way some people are so small minded  about the travelling people.

Ok I didnt know nothing until I started researching my family tree,,My Gran never spoke about her family background, but then again I never asked.

The more I find out the more I am Proud.

hi, all, just looking at the mail. saw your reply, my own mother used to say gorgios could be more(mocherdi ) unclean. than most romany folk. because we had such a small area to live in, it had to be clean. and i am not trying to get at gorgios. but i find it really annoying when you see something in the media about the holocost, and there is no mention of the 700000 gypsies killed, for no other resone than the way they lived. or a sterotype gypsy on tv. that give the wrong impression of true travellers, in my own life i have met really nice gorgios, and travellers. but there are bad and good in all. when my father came across predudice he used to say, if some one committed a murder in london, you dont hang the whole city? why tar all romany people with the same brush. anyway  i dont wish to rant on so, happy new year to all, whoever we are. rob..g
