1871 census TILBURY in Bromley
« on: Tuesday 14 December 10 13:53 GMT (UK) »
Looking for birthplace of William TILBURY b. 1832, Butler to George W. NORMAN in Bromley, Kent, in 1871.

(I run a "church-mouse" website on the T name, can't afford subs etc.)
http://freepages.family.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cmtilbury/index.html

Look-up would be greatly appreciated, as I'm unable to identify this WT - thank you. Caroline

Looking for birthplace of William TILBURY b. 1832, Butler to George W. NORMAN in Bromley, Kent, in 1871.

How do you know Wm Tilbury was a butler to George W Norman please ?

As Tati says he is not with him in 1871 as then George Norman has a butler called Henry Chapman from Doncaster.

I can not see Wm tilbury with George Norman on any other census either
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

Ok I found William Tilbury with the family in 1861 as their butler. The entry has been mistranscribed and has Norman as Herman and William's age as 89 not 29 as on the original

The transcription says William's birthplace is Old Warden, Berkshire but looking at the original it looks more like Old Windsor, Berkshire

The reference for the 1861 census is

RG9/463/147 p2

Thank you for your help; the pob is even more puzzling! I don't have a WT born there then, at present, so maybe a parish boundary moved.

Newspaper reports of fete days held in the NORMAN grounds, named WT as butler. Can't find him before or after. I receive snippets of info from other researchers, try to collate.

My thanks again, and good wishes - Caroline  :) :) :)

Hi Caro, :)
If you input Robert Tilbury, Bedfordshire as search name on FindMyPast 1841 Census then look at orriginal census image you will find William Tilbury aged 6 ,with the rest of family, half way down right hand page, at Windsor Union.Berkshire.
Most of the family have not been tranbcribed thats why you couldnt find him. ;)
I havent looked at later Censii. Thats a start for you.
Good Luck ,Merry Christmas ,Rog :D ;D

1841 census looks OK to me!

HO107/26/17/11/16 at Old Windsor Green

TILBURY, James  M  46
TILBURY, Ann      F  48
TILBURY, James  M  17
TILBURY, Robert  M  11
TILBURY, George  M  8
TILBURY, William  M  6       Only William born in county (Berkshire)

1851 Census finds William in St Oswald, Durham!
Reference HO107/2390/403/4

HOPPER, Adeline  Wife  48 Wife of Clergyman , Not Having Cure of Souls
TILBURY, William  Groom  16  B Old Windsor, Berkshire

N.B. A daughter of the head of the house, Isabella HOPPER (3) was also born in Old Windsor.
Which might explain how William happened to be in Durham?

Wizzy - who told you it was my birthday today????  :D

I had this William with his parents & siblings, but couldn't discover him later on. Brother Robert went to Oxford and became curate, chaplain to Earl Ducie at Tortworth, then a vicar in Yorkshire; his son Hubert Francis also went into the church. I think I should explore the HOPPER connection ... couldn't understand how Robert got his education.

Tonight must look for William post 1861.

And Merry Christmas to you all - Caro (b. UK lvg in the Creuse, France)

Robert was a General Teacher at Colston's Hospital (Now known as Colston's School) in Bristol in 1851.
By 1861 he was Curate of Langford, Berkshire.
In 1871 he is staying at the Randolph Hotel in Oxford, and is Curate of Tortsworth.

Can't find either Robert or William in 1881.

According to the 1864 Kelly's Directory of Oxfordshire, with reference to Langford, Robert was at Cambridge University, Emmanuel College.

Crockford's Clerical Directory of 1885 says:
TILBURY, Robert, Brignal Rectory, Barnard Castle.
Em. Coll. Cam. B.A. 1860. M.A. 1864
C (Curate?) of Langford, Berks, 1860-64
Tortworth, Gloucs, 1864-1876
C. in charge of Brignal 1876-78
V. of Hutton Magna, Yorks 1878-84
C. of Barningham, Yorks 1878-84
