Fisherton Anger marriage 1798
« on: Monday 13 December 10 13:13 GMT (UK) »
I'm hoping for further details about the marriage between Elizabeth LATTY and John BALDWIN (or BALDWELL) at Fisherton Anger, Wiltshire on 31 Dec 1798.  We believe that the name BALDWIN/BALDWELL was a version of the surname BOLWELL, and would love to know the exact wording of the entry in order to discover where this couple originated.

If someone could do a lookup, I would be eternally grateful!

Hi Russet

Looked at the fiche of the original parish records and

- The Banns show John BALDWIN of the parish of Wilton & Elizabeth LATTY of this parish Banns read 16, 23 & 30 Dec 1798

- The Marriage Entry states John BALDWIN & Elizabeth LATTY. Whilst Elizabeth signed X, John actually signed his name and he spelled it BALDWIN too!

Hope it helps.

Cheers

Hi Vaz

Thank you very much for this.  Of this parish, eh?  What a pity this doesn't seem to get me back further.  I was hoping that John had come from another area, one with plenty of researchable Bolwells in it.

Never mind, perhaps one day .....

Cheers
Russet

Hi Russet

One of the "experts" at the RO once told me that in terms of marriages, the person marrying could have lived in the stated parish for as little as 3 weeks!?

Have you looked at the parish of Wilton?

Hi Vaz

Wilton - you say that as if you have inside knowledge!  The name did ring a bell, and I see that one of John and Elizabeth's sons married there.  Do you think it could be the family haunt?

Of course - I read it too quickly!  So there is a Wilton connection, which we did suspect some time ago.  Thanks for your trouble.

Hi Russet

Just to let you know I checked the transcript for Wilton today - baps from 1760-1780 (roughly based on his 1798 marriage) and there are NO BALDWIN, BALDWELL, BOLWELL's. The closest it seems to get beginning with "B" is BOWLES. It does say on the transcription that Oct 1776-Dec 1777 is missing tho! I s'pose I should check the PR fiche  ::)

That's very kind of you, Vaz.  Thanks very much.

I do suspect that the family were based previously around Ansty, as there are Bolwells there with the right kind of naming pattern in the earlier 18th century, but so far I have been unable to link them definitely with the Fisherton Anger John.
