Help: Scottish records for Alexander Jamieson and Martha Sterling from Ireland

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help me.
I am attempting to research an obscure branch of my family tree, and I have reason to believe that the family in question have a strong connection to Glasgow and Scotland. I am researching the Jamieson family from Ireland, and in particular Alexander Jamieson who may have been born in Londonderry, Northern Ireland and whom married Martha Sterling (b. Londonderry, Northern Ireland in 1870 and daughter of John Sterling and Elizabeth Steele) in County Derry in either 1895 or 1902. I know absolutely nothing substantial about Alexander Jamieson other than the fact that he was a Protestant, a probable member of the Orange Order and that he may have had a son or a grandson called Jack Jamieson, whom was briefly mentioned during the RTE version of ‘Who do you think you are?’ for the Irish singer Dana: http://www.rte.ie/tv/whodoyouthinkyouare/s1/outline_dana.html. I can find no trace of Alexander or Martha Sterling on either the 1901 or the 1911 Irish census records, and as I know that my family do have a mysterious connection to Scotland I asked a friend if he could search the Scottish census records. He was able to find a very limited record from 1901 in which an Alexander and Martha Jamieson are listed as living in Govan in Scotland, that both are from Ireland and have a number of children but unfortunately the record is so limited it only lists names. If anyone could help me in regards to a marriage certificate (to which I could discover the names of Alexander’s parents) or a fuller census record I would be absolutely delighted. If anyone can help me, it would be very much appreciated.

Hi,

In 1881 there is an Alexander Jamieson living with a Stirling family at 80 Hamilton Street, in Govan, Lanarkshire.

He is down as being born 1861, Ireland & a  Labourer In Shipyard. The other members of the household are

George Stirling 30 Glasgow  Timekeeper Shipyard
Helen Stirling 30 wife    Ireland
Janet Stirling 1 dau  Govan
Joanna Beveridge 26 visitor Dumfermline, Fifeshire
John Smelie 37 boarder Ireland.

This is not the same Alexander asin 1901 census that you mention.

The 1901 census list the following:
Alex Jamieson age 29 born abt 1872 Ireland living 31 Merkland St, Partick, Govan.  He is listed as a guard tramcar.
Martha Jamieson age 29 born abt 1872 Ireland
Jeanie Jamieson aged 4 born Partick
Elizabeth Jamieson aged 3 born Partick
William Jamieson aged 2 born Partick
Martha S Jamieson aged 7months born Partick

And a George Jamieson aged 34 born abt 1867 Ireland - brother to Alex and labourer in ship yard.

Bearing in mind the fact that census ages are often a bit out, they must have been in Glasgow at least 4 years if the children were all born there so coming over in about 1897 or before.

AS you believe they married in Ireland I dont think you will get a marriage cert,I certianly havent been able to for any of my irish ancestors.

There are 3 possible deaths in Glasgow for Alex on scotlands people, and finding the right one would get his parents names.  However there is only one matching death for a Martha Jamieson Sterling on SP so if you check that you can see when she died and if she was/was not a widow so make it easier to figure out which Alex might be yours.

I think that the latter Alexander Jamieson with the four children and brother seems like a very good match for the Alexander I am seeking to investigate. Unfortunately, I do not have a credit card but I will most definitely ask a friend if they can help me out in order to explore the Scotland’s People website, which looks like an amazing resource, thank you for drawing it to my attention. It would be amazing to actually find some records relating to Alexander and Martha because we know so very little about them: to potentially find out the parents names of Alexander would be excellent. The website looks brilliant and is significantly better value than some Irish websites. Ails if you are looking for help in regards to the Irish marriage certificate of your ancestors http://www.rootsireland.ie/ is an excellent website, but quite expensive. I unfortunately have been unable to fully use the website due to the lack of a credit card but I have heard great reviews about it online.

On the contrary, civil registration of marriages in Ireland began in 1864 for Catholic marriages and in 1845 for non-Catholic marriages so if Alexander and Martha married in Ireland there will be a certificate, although not viewable online. The civil registration index (free) will give the details needed to order a certificate.
