Walsh in Listowel
« on: Sunday 12 December 10 08:01 GMT (UK) »
Hello again!
How can I establish which townland my Catholic Walshes from Listowel come from?
William Walsh and Eleanor (nee O'Brien) had a few children in Listowel in the early 1800s, some of whom left the area in the 1840s. Therefore I don't think that Griffiths will be useful.
I would like to be able to follow  up William and Eleanor but I'm not sure how to. " irishgenealogy.ie"  establishes the family in Listowel but appears not to indicate a townland.  Can someone tell me whether I can find out where these irishgenealogy records have originated?

The entries for the children of william Walsh and Eleanor O Brien show that they are from the RC parish registers of Listowel. As far as I understand it, the majority of records showing on the irishgenealogy.ie site are of parish records mainly  C of I and RC. But the practice or recording a placename or townland varies. You could try for a Wiiliam Walsh in the Tithe Applotment Books c. late 1820's or early 30's for Kerry. There are some civil parishes available online but I haven't seen one from Listowel. The Lds have films of the TAB, if you have an LDS centre near you.

Just doublechecked and the LDS don't seem to have the Tithe Applotment Books for Kerry on film. Sorry for the misinformation.

Hi,

My grandmother is from Listowel and her name was Sheena Walsh, so I suspect there might be a distant connection.
Do you have any info?

William Walsh and Eleanor (nee O'Brien) had a few children in Listowel in the early 1800s, some of whom left the area in the 1840s. Some of their children are listed in " irishgenealogy.ie"  . I don't have any information about them, as I am descended from their son Patrick who married Mary Connell and moved to the Channel islands.
So although I know that the family came from Listowel I cant go ny further without a townland. I have been told that there were lots of walsh families on the area,  do you have any idea where I might find more about this particular branch of the walshes? Do you have a line back from Sheena Walsh?

cheers,
Cathy

Hi

Just read your post now. Many large towns such as Listowel have historical societies. There is usually a local person who is a historian and records people and deeds over the years. Unfortunately I have no connection with that area, but I am guessing that if you were to write to them c/o of the parish priest of the local church in Listowel, or write to him directly, you could get some information.  Good luck with the search
