Henry Torrens Kenny - Folkestone
« on: Saturday 11 December 10 23:58 GMT (UK) »
Hello all!

I have been looking up my great-grandmother and the 1911 census tells me that she was a between maid for Cprl Henry T. Kenny, living at 63 Bouverie Rd West, Folkestone. His wife Zoe Kenny was the President of the New Constitutional Society for Women’s Suffrage around this time.

Has anyone got any ideas about how I could find out further information about his household - or his position, documents from the estate etc? I don't really know what I'm looking for but I'd love to build up a picture of the world that my G-grandmother was working in.

Thanks a lot. I really welcome any suggestions.

Adam.

The 1911 image should show the full household members

To save confusion He was a Colonel in the Army not a Corporal. :)
There are several references to him on the London Gazette Archives arround 1880s as a Second Leiutenant. Should start you off.
I think the between maid was the general Scullery /Washhouse cooks Kitchen Scivvy.if I rememder rightly.

Excellent, thank you Rog!
I'll see if I can get hold of any of the Gazette Archives you mentioned. I found a few hits online which gave me a bit of info on him and his wife's marriage. She sounded quite well-off as the daughter of Agent-General of New Brunswig, Canada.

I can also start researching the life of a scullery maid/kitchen skivvy too which will give me some idea about the workload of a girl in this position.

Ps CaroleW I have looked up the 1911 census as you suggested and have a full transcript of the members of the Kenny's household - servants and all. :)
