Douglas Walter Wood a law clerk may well be favourite....born Fulham, living at 59 Pinner Road, Harrow in later life

1901 census
49, Mansions (Flats), Waldemar Avenue, Fulham, London
Arthur J Wood........Head....33..........Gold Laceman...........Chelsea
Edith........."............Wife.....30...........................................S Kensington
Douglas W "............Son.......5...........................................Fulham
Lawrence C"............Son.......3...........................................Fulham
---------

Arthur J Wood has his own business tailoring for the Army so may well be listed in Directories of the period?

Good work, Bryant, but I'd already checked this chap out and he died in 1917, if I remember rightly, in Egypt.

He was a good match.... for a while. And he had a really interesting family too, more's the pity.

I've found a Douglas Wood in Rickmansworth who was an apprentice boat builder that also looks interesting. The trade given on the birth certificate was Carpenter.

One thing I did forget to mention, is Douglas had a middle name of William. I only remembered when I'd been looking at the certificate again this afternoon. A quick check on the BMDs found a Douglas William Wood born 1895 in Watford. Although Ancestry didn't have a marriage match, I found one on Find My Past, where there's a marriage for a Douglas Wood to Elizabeth Atkins in 1919, Watford registration district.

Maybe that's a reason (if it is him) that Douglas and Jane weren't married and never married.

Best regards,
Sally

Well done Bryant- That sounds very much to me as though one of them wasn't free to marry earlier.....on account of already being married perhaps?

I'll still get my pal to go to Harrow Library in the middle of the week for you.

Bryant,

Thank You! You could well turn out to be our Christmas Star this year. :-*

I'm going to apply for the certificate tonight, and pace the floor till it arrives!!

Carol,

Thank you, too, that would be just brilliant.

Many, many thanks once again,

Sally

Added note: I just checked on Ancestry as to why I didn't trip over this last time, and it's entered on their indexes as:

Name: Douglas W Wood
Spouse Surname: Lawrence
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1954
Registration district: Harlow
Registration county (inferred): Essex
Volume Number: 5f
Page Number: 1231

I'll have to write and tell them to check these entries out.
Cambridgeshire - Bedford, Storey, Fowler, Ford, Spolton, Maneyweathers, Brown
Huntingdonshire - Starling/Starnell, Livett, Newman
Suffolk - Dempster, Brewer, Leader
Lancashire - Chew, Slater, Martin, Bolton, Haworth, Leeming

Hi Sally

You've written at the bottom of your last posting.....
Harlow/Essex s/be Harrow(Middlesex) 5f 1231 ?

Careful as to what you order.

Hi Ray,

Yes, the entry on Ancestry.com is shown as the marriage having taken place in Harlow. When you look at the original page entry via the link, the place is definitely Harrow. In fact, it's not the first time I've now seen this error.

I triple checked my order to make sure I had the correct information before I ordered from the GRO  :)

Thanks for the prompt, though.

Sally

My friend went to the harrow library for you just now.

The electoral rolls there go up to 1910 and then start again in 1935-39 and then after the war.So sadly 1928 is not covered.

I will PM you his findings, and then I suggest you contact the LMA (even go there if you can) as they usually hold most electoral rolls, hope that 1928 is held there.

He also looked at the Kelly's directories but no luck there either.

Sorry,

Carol
