West Winterslow parish registers - BROWNJOHN

I would appreciate a look-up in the West Winterslow parish registers for baptisms of any Brownjohn family, particularly Richard, in the period c 1690 to 1710, and also a marriage for Richard BROWNJOHN, probably some time in the 1720s.

I'm also looking for a marriage of Thomas BROWNJOHN to Hannah (unknown) - in the early 1700s/1690s.  These names were obtained from Lease documents of 1719 and 1774 relating to property in the Winterslow area and they may well be Richard's parents.

I'm afraid I don't have much to go on except that Richard's second marriage (as a widower) was in London 1736 and he died there in 1747 (age not stated).

There is a marriage licence bond

Richard BROWNJOHN 25 bachelor a yeoman from Winterslow and Rebeccah GILBERT 23 a spinster from Newton Tony 24 Feb 1714 Bondsman Henry GILBERT yeoman of Newton Tony

and looks like a daughter (but if Richard was in London by then)

William GILBERT 22 bachelor a farmer of Shipton Hampshire and Rebeccah BROWNJOHN spinster 18 of Winterslow 29 Sep 1740 bondsman Richard BROWNJOHN farmer of Winterslow

Baptisms
There was a son Richard 19 Jan 1715
and Mary 26 Aug 1725
and a Dennis baptised 28 Feb 1728

now there is a Rebeccah BROWN 4 Jan 1722 to Richard and Elizabeth (fits with age at marriage)
and a John BROWN 10 Jul 1718
also Thomas BROWN 12 Oct 1720

also

Richard BROWNJOHN yeoman of Winterslow and Elizabeth NALDER of Figheldean late Winterbourne Gunner 16 Apr 1740 bondsman Stephen NALDER of Winterbourne Gunner (no further information)

Maybe this was the son

This couple also had a Richard baptised 23 Sep 1742
and a Dennis baptised 17 Apr 1741 
and Mary 27 Apr 1744

Also marriage bond

Thomas NORTHEAST Jun bach 26 yeoman of Whaddon and Mary BROWNJOHN 24 spinster of Winterslow 17 Nov 1750 bondsman Thomas NORTHEAST yeoman of Winterslow

In 1749 there is an Elizabeth a widow marrying (age not given but husband is 44)

Dear Kris,

Wow !  thank you so much for that very speedy response - I sent my request early morning our time and now it is mid-afternoon and the reply is here.

I think there are too many Richard BROWNJOHNs emerging - but the marriage to Rebeccah Gilbert seems a go for his first marriage and would make him older than I thought he might be. 

I've been trying to find any relevant Wiltshire wills for Brownjohn but haven't been able to connect with the site - I think it must be down today.

Would I be pushing my luck to ask for a check of the burial registers to see whether there's a burial for Rebeccah BROWNJOHN nee Gilbert 1728-1736?  If there is, then the chances of her husband being the Richard I'm chasing are increased.

Hi Genial,

Sorry I can't help with the burials. I am in SA  We do have some lovely members of this board who go to the records office at times for our members. I hope someone is able to help you further with this. These are marriage Licence Bonds. There may be other entries where the marriage was by banns, so will be interesting to see if any other entries surface or if there is a burial listed for Rebeccah.

Thank you for your offer, no not quite all resolved yet  - particularly looking for burials.

Looking for any BROWNJOHN burials c1700-1750 if that's possible, particularly
Rebeccah BROWNJOHN between 1728-1736.  I know some of these old registers aren't the easiest to search - hope this one's in good shape!

Absolutely no rush.

I know that the Rebecca burial is later than you were looking for - but do we have another Rebecca marrying a BROWNJOHN who could be this widow?

Rebecca GILBERT & Richard BROWNJOHN 24 Feb 1714 at Salisbury St Edmund (not Winterslow!)

Many thanks for checking the burial registers for me.  It seems the BROWNJOHNs weren't a huge family in the Winterslow area - perhaps hadn't been there for generations, particularly if the register goes back to 1597 and the first burial is only 1735 - I think my Richard was most likely in London by then as he married there in 1736. 

Unfortunately the Rebeccah in 1761 is too late to possibly be the first wife of my Richard, so there's either another Richard/Rebeccah marriage or I've pinned my hopes on the wrong tree and Richard's first wife was someone else. 

The names of Thomas (or Francis) and Hannah (or Elizabeth) have recurred in a couple of documents re land, etc., so I'm guessing one or other of them may be Richard's parents.

I know my Richard's father and Richard had land in Winterslow but it may be that their own association with the village was a generation or so further back and they were "absentee landlords".
