Pollard Street, Middlesbrough
« on: Saturday 11 December 10 01:18 GMT (UK) »
My great grandmother lived in Pollard Street, Middlesbrough according to her wedding cert. Could anyone enlighten me to where it is? I live in Middlesbrough so would love to go and see where it was :) Thanks in advance

Hi and welcome
What date are we talking about?    If you give us a name we might be able to find her on a census search which would show where the street was.   I have a map of Middlesbrough in 1913 but there is no index so it might take a while to find it!

Actually, another useful thing would be to know where they married as presumably it will be in that parish - unless it was in the register office.

According to a google search it had a police station and in 1891 was RG12 4009 13-16   That appears to be the Newport Road area though I am having trouble with a web site I want to access at the moment.  Will try later if nobody else has found it for you.

It appears to be between Kent Street and Gloucester Street on the 1891 census - in St John Evangelist parish.  Not sure that helps!

Hi andrea! They married in 1918 in Middlesbrough. Her name was Violet Poskitt she was born in 1894. I used to live near Newport Road. Can't find anything on Pollard Street at all on Google maybe I'm not looking hard enough :)

I have found it.  It is one of a series of streets that run north between Grange Road and Russell Street.  West to East they are Poplar, Gloucester, Pollard, Kent, Elder, Duke of York, Willow, Clarence and Hazel.  All back to back terraces from the look of the map.

Aw wow that's brilliant! Is there anywhere I can buy an old map of Middlesbrough where I would find it?

I have the Alan Godfrey 1913 map and it is on that.  www.alangodfreymaps.co.uk   You were given that link on another forum last year - that showed up on google too!Looking at a modern map it was almost exactly where the Institute of Modern Art is now.
