Really interesting photo Paul. Swan Street, and Swan Street School, were in Whitechapel in the East End, part of the minories, right on the edge of Aldgate City Ward. My 2xg grandfather was born there in 1868.

Thanks for the info on Swan Street, I hadn't been able to locate it. My grandmother lived at Leman Street and later Glasshouse Street (now called John Fisher Street) in Whitechapel so that fits nicely.

Wiggy, my feeling is that it's likely to be quite a major event as they have made quite an effort with their costumes and have obviously thought it important  enough to get a school photo of the occasion. My grandmother would have been 5 years old in 1902 so either the Coronation or Empire Day sound like good possibilities. Your suggestion on the backdrop makes sense. I imagine there would have been a lot more groups of children in other outfits and so maybe there were lots of banners for different parts of the empire?

Paul.

the Union Jack whilst the figure in the centre holds the Jack itself.

Far be it from me to argue with Old Rowley (hi OR ;D) but isn't it the Union flag? It's only the Union Jack if it's flying from a ship? Maybe even a Royal Navy ship in wartime? OH told me once, I don't remember the details.

Heck, I'm lucky if I can remember what I did with my car keys ;D ;D ;D

Hi China,
You are correct of course in what you say about the title of the flag and although I know it as both the Union flag and the Union Jack I decided to use the latter form as I felt that more people that viewed this thread would know what I was on about in relation to the central figure. Your OH is also correct in that the Jack is flown by the Royal Navy and I think that it was George II that ruled this as being the case (although I do know that it was being flown on a Jack Staff on board ships well before he became King).
