The property of "Wallenbillen" NSW
« on: Thursday 09 December 10 00:46 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I have been struggling for some time with this one,
In family records of "Samuel Phillips" Molong NSW in the late half of 1800's,
he owned the property called (then) "Wallenbillen" it is also recorded that he had the first brick house built in Molong at this property, but it also says "on the Bogan river" the Bogan river is some 100kms away from Molong, so Molong must have covered a very large region at the time, it was 16,000 acres with a 7 mile front on the river and 10 mile back, and was a cattle and sheep fattening station, this property I would think is/was near Peak Hill, being on the Newell Hwy, the property was up for sale in 1863/4, sale was being done at a Sydney venue, eventually being sold off in 1888, my problem is that the local councils of the area cannot identify the property of have the name on historical records.
Does anyone know of it and where it was situated???

Found this, here http://contribute.abc.net.au/_The-Wellington-Post-1900/blog/166075/32422.html

The Wellington Post - 1900
From Barbara Preston.

The Wellington Times

Mr Dulhunty Report, 21st September 1900

The District Inspector Mr R G Dulhunty has recently returned from a trip round Narromine, Dandaloo, and Tomingley districts. According to his report everything in the line of stock is promising and could not look better.

But as regards crops, thing are by no means so bright. From a farmer’s point of view, unless rain comes quickly there will be a rather poor look out for lots of crops.

At Narromine and towards the Bogan, these are already beginning to turn yellow. At Craigie Lea the owner pointed out one paddock and declared that if rain did not come very soon indeed they would not get a stem from it.

Some of the early crops looked fairly green, but the late crops seem to be making no headway. Shearing was in full swing along the Bogan, at Derribong, Waterloo, Strathallen, Bulgandramine and Wallen Billen. Shearing sheds seem to be short handed this year.

Mr W. I. Perry Comptom is shearing 60,000 and has just erected a splendid shed with up-to-date machines.

On the Bogan and through Tomingley and the Gundongs rabbits are swarming but the selectors generally seem to be competing with the pest to the best of their ability.

Thankyou, this suggesting it was still named so in 1900,
but council dept around this area such as, Molong, Bogan shire, Narromine,
can't find the property in records or where it was on the river, why? I don't know, Samuel Phillips was as it seems, a well known business person, the family itself was in just about every little village/hamlet in the Molong/Wellington/Dubbo areas, but still nothing.

Samuel Phillips put the property up for auction in 1864 after owning it for 20 years. You may have this?

Yes, have this, as it says in the sale notice, the house was still under construction at that time, I would say being built solid those day by the Bloomfield bros, it would still be standing today, but where?
might have to go walkabout along the river. ;D

Hi there,

Have you tried the Parish Maps online site .... It can be a pain to zoom in and out but perhaps there's mention of the property or of the landholders .... I think you should try "Wellington" for the Parish, but I stand corrected as I am relying on my memory of searching these maps some time ago.

This is the link that's listed here at RChat on the NSW Resources Board  ;)

Parish Maps

Fingers Crossed  (that online site could be easier, but its not actually designed for family history searchings and its better than going to the NSW Lands Head Office !)

Cheers,  JM

Just as an addition to JM's advice about the Parish Maps...this page gives an intro to the NSW Dept of Lands historical maps and a link to the Geographical Names Board where you can search for localities and get the relevant parish in order to look up the Parish Maps:
