Unhelpful Family members
« on: Wednesday 13 April 05 06:52 BST (UK) »
I started my search in 2001 when i finally convinced my husband a computer was a good thing lol
Since then i have tried every resource i can find on the net.
Until then i had to rely on family memories and for the most part that was great up to a point.
Am i the only one who has a family who are afraid to know where they come from or what their ancestors got up to?

On my mothers side i cant get past my great grandmother as my Mother doesnt know her grand parents surnames.
On my fathers side i cant get past my great great grandfather as they dont seem to be registered in the Scottish records and my grandfather is a little unwilling to help as we have skeletons in the closet.
Now this can be disheartening for some but 4 years later i am still on the prowl  for info and i know someone out there has hit the same wall i have.
My husbands family are a little more easier to find and with my father in-laws encouragement i have been able to get back as far as 1766 on his great grandmothers side.

I love knowing what my family did all those years ago and it actually explains a few things this far down the line.I just wish they would stay in one place and make up their minds how they want to spell their names  ;D

Hi Carol,

Believe it or not having the same problems as you, have hit  a brickwall with my mom's parents cannot find a thing, on the other side gee the skeletons are very thick and fast coming out of the closets, seems one set like having to get married or not bothering too till many years later. l am just about to tear my hair out with frustration ;D Added to this this spelling on the name changes quite often.

good luck

Hi
Post what you have you and you never know!

It can be hard, I had the same problem finding my grandfather, (he changed his name) but after about 5 years I discovered his whereabouts! Dont be disheartened, we all struggle and I finally tracked him down by his date of birth.

Post the names and dates you have and I will take a look and I am sure others will help too.

The first couple who are hard to find are:
William Hall and Mary Madden.
I ordered their sons marriage certificate and found them on there.
Mary is on the certificate as deceased on the 9th of April 1872 and her maiden name is shown.
Their son is William Hall married to Rachel Graham.
So we come to Rachels parents who are next on the list.
William Graham and Helen Boyd.William was deceased on his daughters wedding day.
The marriage of William and Rachel took place in High Church, Glasgow.
With this in mind i searched the censuses on the Scotlandspeople website. To no avail.
I have been told that the Hall family were in Ireland at one point which is where i have problems as there is a conflict of information about whereabouts they where.
I am told it was Donnegal or somewhere in county Armagh.

My next dead end is my great grandmother.
She was born Violet Lavinia Poskitt and married my Great Grandfather Cox.I managed to find her on the 1901 census but that is as far as i get.

My most challenging family member is :
Charles Walden. The reason for this is the surname change.I have posted on the worcester page about him.
Born 19/09/1847 in Alvechurch but at the 1851 census his family are not in Worcestershire  ???
However he is possibly in Alvechurch in 1871 boarding with a John (49 b.Kings Norton) & Betsy (45 b.Alvechurch) ASHFORD & their family

He married Elizabeth Catherine Bennett in 1876 in Aston and from the on in he was in Alvechurch as a Baker until the 1901 census when he and his family are in Redditch.

There are many more but i think this post is long enough for now  :o

As you can see i have many leads to follow so i dont get bored lol
And i dont think anything is going to put me off just yet.

Hi,

You were lucky Carol, my father burnt all family stuff before his death in 2000 to be nasty. All l have is mom's birth cert to get my grandparents names John Graham and Lillian Graham nee Fulford from Birkenhead Cheshire. They died John in 1960  age 73 and Lilian age 76 in 1968 l have their death certs which don't enlighten me at all. l have search for their marriage from 1907 to 1914 and unless l missed it cann't find them. l found 1 John Graham born in 1887 which is about the right year, Lilian should be abt 1892 but have come up with nothing. All this because of one mean old man.

My grandmother had a clear out when my grandfather died.Photos, certificates and even his war medals nearly got thrown away.
All i have is what my mother remembers.
I have searched the Tees Valley Index for my grandfather and am going to order his birth certificate to get his parents names to get me started.
I did try to find my great uncle John Adam as he was killed in Dunkirk aged in 1944,Mum says she visited his grave but i cant remember where she said it was.I tried the Commonwealth War Graves site but he isnt listed.
All i kow about my Adam side is they were originally from Arbroath,my grandfather had the family researched(one of the things that got cleared out)
At this rate looks like i will have to sit and wait for the 1920 census to make progress on that side  ::)

Its odd really that one side of the family can be traced back hundreds of years yet others just seem so hard to find.
