Maggie's husband (father of my grandmother) was George Monro Sturrock (he died in 1898). I don't know what the M stands for in George Jr, but it could well be Monro. Don't think there are any Melvins! Will check  FindMyPast and SP when I get a chance! Have now got at least 10 2nd cousins in Canada I didn't know I had from the 3 brothers who emigrated!

Oh my goodness! That could well be George Jr! Thank you so much! That will help me a lot finding who his mother was, and perhaps if George Jr was married!
You're a star!!!

http://newspapers.nl.sg/ might help
Under "George Sturrock" there are hits 1920s through 1940s, looks like mostly work related though.

In 1934, the Hill Street Police Station and Barracks was opened by Director of Public Works and Adviser for Malay States, G. Sturrock, who was also a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA).

RIBA might have something on him?

Great minds think alike! Have got an application ready to send of to RIBA for his nomination papers, which should give me some info. I had already done a search and most of what I found was from the Straits Settlements.

Couldn't find a birth for George M Jr in the UK but I did find this - On the Empress of Canada dept Shanghai China on 29/1/1937 and arriving in Honolulu on 8/2/1937
George Munro Sturrock born abt 1913, Scottish Nationality born Serebam, Malaysia, an electrical engineer and
Leslie Louisa Cartwright Sturrock born abt 1915 in Portobello, Scotland and Ann Sturrock aged about 3  born in Calcutta.
And then all 3 dept Honolulu on 27/3/1937 on the Lurline and arriving in San Francisco on 1/4/1937.

This could be my George Jr. Apart from Munro for Monro, the fact that he was born in the Malay States is very compelling...

Have just received the death certificate for George Munro Sturrock (Jr), who died 1991. His wife was Audrey Mary. Am hunting high and low, but can't find a marriage for them yet...

Don't know if this any help to you or not but I found this entry when I was at the Dundee library looking for something else in a back copy of the following paper.

Courier & Advertiser Tuesday November 3rd 1936
Birth at Calcutta on 1st November 1936 to Mr & Mrs George Munro Sturrock – a daughter(both well)

It did not give a name for the girl but could it be your Ann or perhaps they had another daughter born in Calcutta.

The only reason I took a note of it is there are Sturrocks in my family but have no idea if this relates to mine.

Hossack Banff, Paterson Meigle & Dundee, Sturrock Monikie, McCready Londonderry,Hancox West Bromwich  & Evesham,

Thanks very much! I certainly think it's my George - it's a bit of annoying when they didn't give the name of the child, but since only Ann is mentioned in 1937 (although she would be just over a year old), it might be her...
Have just rechecked Ancestry, haven't a clue where I got Ann being aged 3, because now when I check the same record on Ancestry, she arrived from Honolulu at San Francisco with a birth date of abt 1936 which would be right for Ann!
