Prison Records
« on: Monday 06 December 10 21:41 GMT (UK) »
I have found a great uncle in the 1911 census as an inmate at Maidstone prison, Kent. How do I go about finding his records or court documents for that prison?

 ???

hello & welcome
I think you'll find the Prison records are subject to the 100 year rule & won't be viewable until 2011.
The event may have been reported on in the local paper, back copies are normally kept by the local records office but you would need to go there & search them.

Hi, if you know where he may have lived-maybe 1901 census gives a lead?- then you could try searching online the local newspaper for his area to see if there is any article therein that conatins his name.
That might give you some info. Local papers often carry news of locals... but do you know where he lived when sentenced?

there's no guarantee this would work but I'm casting around for ideas ::)

Thank you both for your welcome & input.
In 1891 census he is in Birmingham but I can't find him in 1901. Are newspaper archives available online as I live in Austalia?

This appears to be them in 1901 mistranscribed as Willimon.
RG13; Piece: 2886; Folio: 122; Page: 30.
doing a free search in 1911 the family are in Rugby with 3 more children:
Winifred Catherine/1905/Rugby
Harold Eardley/1908/do
Margaret Alice/1909/do
Hubert has the middle name of Edgington & appears to be the son of Edward Dinwoody Wilmot & Phoebe Charlotte Freeman. Is this your family?
They appear on all the censuses.
let me know if you want any of it.
