DEAKIN - 1841 Census look up - please
« on: Sunday 05 December 10 23:55 GMT (UK) »
Would anyone please be willing to look up David DEAKIN (b 1823). Not sure which county he'd be in, but oral history says his parents may have been from Longton.

He emigrated to the States at some point and married there in 1855, so he might only be lurking somewhere in the 1841 Census.

Sorry, it's a little vague, but I'm hoping there might not be too many David Deakins around!! ;)

Thanks in anticipation  :)

1841 ages were rounded down to the nearest 5yrs and birthplaces were not shown - just whether or not they were born in the county in which they were living

There is one entry b 1821 and 2 b 1826 - none were born in the county in which they were living

If he was b 1823 - he would appear as age 15 so either of the 1826 entries could be him

One was living in Uttoxeter Staffs but not b Staffs - no other Deakins in household

The other was living in Salford Lancs with parents James & Elizabeth

Thanks Carole,
Mmm... not as clear cut as I'd hoped.

I'm trying to sort this one on behalf of an American friend, whose few notes (about the Staffs connection in particular) now seem like they might be someone's IGI wishful thinking.
However, I've now seen an original handwritten note which probably contains the only certain facts.
It looks to have been written in the late 1800's in the US, so unclear quite who wrote it.

Here's a verbatim transcript... I've no idea what the reference to Devizes is, but that's how the note begins.   If you like puzzles - will you take a look & see if you can spot any clues I might have missed?? :)

"Devizes a large market town in Wiltshire.  Mary Ann Jones was born Oct 28 1831 in the County of Hereford, England. 9.10 AM.  David Deakin was born Feby 5.50 AM 31st 1831 in the County of Derby, England (we were) (?)Married August 16th 1855. George Bolton Deakin Born May 12th 1856 7.30.PM Birmingham All ….
Sarah Ann Deakin Born August 31st 1857 9.45 PM Hancock Co Ohio...."

It goes on to detail more births in the US.
It looks possible that they'd emigrated before the 1851 and I'd imagine there would be a fair crop of Mary Ann Jones' born in Hereford in 1831, so she won't be an easy one to trace in the 1841 either.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated!  :) :)

Thanks again
 Aitch

The name Deakin later develops into 'Dakin'  and interestingly I have Dakin ancestors from the Derbys/Staffs border, including a Bolton Dakin - (not a common forename I think).   I wonder if 'Dakin' would have been picked up in your soundex search for Deakin???

The IGI has a Submitted Records of John;
John DEAKIN, Christened  24 march 1799, Longton, Stafford
Parents  JOHN Deakin and Frances BOLTON
They married 02 May 1797, Norton in the Moors, Stafford

This needs to be confirmed by Parish Records and hopefully someone has access :)

Looks good though as Davids first Son is George Bolton Deakin.

Oooooh.... that is looking good Trish - thankyou!
Also gives some creedence to the idea that an earlier generation was from Staffordshire with the Longton connection - and the Bolton surname used as a middle name is a gift isn't it :)   There seem to be Bolton's in later generations too.

Have you any experience of tracking emmigrants - my lot thought the world ended at Leek and Ahsbourne, so I've never had cause to search ships manifests!    Any hints to how I might go about seeing when/where from David might sailed?  I'm not sure where to start!  If this is one and the same, he must have left between 1851 and 1856.  Is there a database somewhere??

Many thanks again for your time and help

- Aitch  :)

You are welcome :)
Mmm not my area of expertise emigration to the USA/Canada etc

Now with Georges Birth is that Birmingham in England or USA?
Did David and Mary Marry in England or not?
(I cant find a Marriage in England)

Maybe if no one posts any extra info on here then a posting on the USA Borad may help as people have access to Records we do not.

Trish :)

Someone has Tree with John 1800 on it but have him born Stone, Staffs but I think we have the correct one as your David is with him and he is born Longton.

I was looking for a Marriage in Staffs for John and Sarah but this may be it ;)
John DEAKIN
Sarah WINFIELD, 28 March 1826, St Peter, Derby, Derby, England
(Source Familysearch Pilot)

Now in 1851 Census we have Mary Winfield, Neice, living with John Deakin and Family;
Chrsitening/baptism, F/S Pilot;
Mary WINFIELD, 10 Feb 1828, Church Gresley, Derby, England
Parents STEPHEN and FRANCES

So is Stephen Sarahs Brother? I think so!
