Relative in India?
« on: Sunday 05 December 10 23:36 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if anyone can help me?? For ages I've been trying to trace some body who used to send gifts of jewellery and money to my great grandparents. In the family it was said that a relative married an Indian lady. He sent presents to my gt grandmother, and also sent money to them monthly. This must have been up until 1918 when my gt grandmother died and the presents and money stopped.
My mother used to say they lived in the White House, Mysore. I don't know whether he was a relative or not and I don't know how to find out. It's all very vague and I feel that with so little to go on I've no chance at all of tracing him. Everyone who might have known anything has passed away.
It's a long shot I know, but has anybody any ideas? I'd be grateful for anything at all.

Thank you so much for replying to my post. I looked on the site you recommended for any information but could find nothing.

I think the person I'm looking for will be on gt grandmother's side, so I looked for Hurd, Horner, Mountain and Lamb, the first three came from Wakefield, the Lamb family from Ripon but was unsuccessful.

Thanks once again.

Should have said before that the British Library at St. Pancras has a comprehensive collection of documents both civilian and military of the British in India. Well worth either a vist or a google.
