Jane Templeton

Hi,

I am looking for some information on Jane Templeton.

Jane Templeton married Thomas Campbell, I am guessing around around 1863 because their first child John Campbell was born in Feb 1864. I believed they had 8 children - see below.

John Campbell, 26 Feb 1864, 0363, Aughadowey, Londonderry
Catherine Donnelly Campbell, 15 July 1865, Aughadowey, Londonderry
Mary Jane Campbell, 06 Oct 1867, 452, Aughadowey, Derry
Charles Campbell, 01 Jul 1869, Londonderry
Thomas Edward Campbell, 03 Jun 1871, 524 Aughadowey, Derry
Grace Campbell, 13 Feb 1873
Rose Campbell, 10 Feb 1877, Macosquin, Londonderry
Bridget Campbell, 29 Jul 1878,  Macosquin, Londonderry

My great grandfather Patrick McLaughlin married Catherine Donnelly Campbell in Coleraine R. C. Church, Killowen Parish on 4 Oct 1887.

I would love to get some information on the Campbell/Templeton side of the family. I am curious about my great grandmothers name “Donnelly Campbell”, where did the Donnelly come from?? It has been mentioned to me that Presbyterians always gave their children their mothers maiden name as a middle name, this is very interesting if this is true because Catherine is the only child that seems to have the surname as her middle name also where they Presbyterians??

If anyone has any information I would be very grateful if you could send it on to me.

Thanks

Sorry- but using a surname as a middle name doesn't indicate they were Presbyterian or that it was the mother's maiden name. 'Donnelly' could have been a grandmother's maiden name (or from even further back in the famil tree) or the name of a local clergyman, doctor, teacher, neighbour, etc.

What's listed as Thomas Campbell's occupation on Catherine's marriage certificate. I suspect it might say labourer based on the birthplaces of the children.

John Campbell, 26 Feb 1864, 0363, Aughadowey, Londonderry
Mary Jane Campbell, 06 Oct 1867, 452, Aughadowey, Derry
Thomas Edward Campbell, 03 Jun 1871, 524 Aughadowey, Derry
The numbers I've highlighted are the pages from the civil registers.

Civil registration of non-Catholic marriages (including Registry Office) began in 1845 (R.C. ones from 1864) so it should be listed in the civil index. I search for 'Jane Templeton' but don't see it listed so perhaps they were also married in a Catholic church.
Civil registration of births also began in 1864 so if there were older children than John they would not be listed in I.G.I./LDS records which is probably the source of your list of children.

I've checked the records for Aghadowey, Crossgar, Macosquin (Englishtown), Killaig , 1st Garvagh, 2nd Garvagh, 3rd Garvagh and Moneydig Presbyterian churches and don't find baptisms for any of this family

Hi, I am descended from an uncle of your Patrick, ( married to Catherine Donnelly Campbell). His uncle was also called Patrick and married an Ellen Mary Mooney. He was a spirit merchant, as was your Patrick, with both being based on the waterside of Coleraine. I have been working on my family tree, and have all the children of your Patrick, some fourteen in number. Are you descended from one of them? Would love to hear from you.

It's been a while since this topic was started and almost as long since original poster has been online but lots of new resources are available online (many of them free).

For example, here's Catherine's birth registration showing she was born in Macosquin (townland) in Macosquin Civil Parish but which falls in Aughadowey sub-district for vital registration.
