McCauley from Clones
« on: Sunday 05 December 10 18:56 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for the parents of James McCauley from the town of Clones in the county of Monaghan. He was born about 1797 to 1806 and married Anne Jane Brakey. They came to Ontario Canada about 1840 with three children James, Isaiah and John. The 1852 Canada census shows that he was Presbyterian and a farmer. He died in Canada in May 1885. I have his history in Canada. I believe his family were members of the Scots House Rectory in Ireland . He may have had a brother Alexander.

Statutory records of births, deaths & marriages started in Ireland in 1864 (1845 for Protestant and Non-Conformist marriages). Prior to that you are heavily dependant on church records, where they exist. In general, there are few records prior to 1800.

In your case your ancestors all left before the start of statutory records. You do know that they came from Clones and were Presbyterian. That helps but I suspect the problem you may face is that there are no church records covering their births, and possibly their marriage and births of their children because they just don’t go back far enough. I am not familiar with the “Scots House Rectory in Ireland” (As a general rule Presbyterians tended to have Manses rather than Rectories, which seems a more Church of Ireland term). There appear to have been at least 3 Presbyterian churches in and around Clones.

The Public Record Office for Northern Ireland (PRONI) has copies of many of the parish registers, including those for Clones, and has a list of those held elsewhere. www.proni.gov.uk/
The records themselves are not on line and you need to search them in person. PRONI is temporarily closed until April 2011 but there are temporary arrangements to view this data at Cregagh Library, Belfast. See PRONI website for details.

You might want to check graveyards for possible deaths (eg Alexander, if he remained in Ireland). Though some Presbyterian churches do have their own graveyards, it was quite common to use Church of Ireland graveyards too.

Hi!  My name is chuck hill.  I'm descended from Alexander McCauley, son of James McCauley and Anne Jane Breakey.  I was wondering if you have found James' parents or Anne's?  Alexander's son, Samuel Harvey Perdue, is my grandfather.  I have not had much luck.  I was in County Monaghan in 2009 but only for a day, and the Library was closed.  However, I did discover that the Breakey's were most likely French Heugonauts.

I found the following on Ancestry World Tree:

Thanks Chuck. I didn't have this information on Alexander. I don't have any information on James or Annie's parents yet except the 1852 census which lists James mother Mary 84 years and widowed.  Most of my information on the McCauleys ( which is extensive) has come from a descendent of Alexander's brother John McCauley.

Hi
No information directly on McCauley or Breakey/Breaky/Brakey, but if the family originated from Clones then the Breakey side at least could connect to a Breakey line from the area around the townlands of Lislea/Lisleagh, Corrinary (and various spellings), Carnroe and the area of Scotshouse, and parishes of Clones and Currin. If've you've done DNA then you could find some links to Breakey and McCauley through that. There are some quite old records from St Andrews CoI church of Scotshouse, but I'm not sure of where these are now located.
Maybe this helps. If you find anymoe on the Breakey side, I'd be interested
