Is Rose's maiden name McGregor by any chance?

Have you considered asking the moderators to move this thread to the Canadian board?

yes it is Mcgregor and I didn't know that I could have it moved as this is my first time doing this . I have received lots of helpful info and not sure anything else would help.
why do you ask about Rose ?

There is a Herbert Hughes, age 24, married, born England, destined for Montreal, PQ aboard the Empress of Britain which sailed from Liverpool to Quebec arriving September 5, 1911.  His occupation was assistant cashier and he intended to pursue the same occupation in Canada.

You stated that he was an office clerk so assistant cashier might be close.

A good partial match from the census is an Eric Herbert Hughes. He's the grandson of a widow McGregor. A woman called Rose is described as the widow's married daughter, but given the McGregor name in the original.
I'll PM the details
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.

Assuming the above is the right Eric and Rose, I've been looking for Herbert and the other children in 1911, but so far drawn a blank. I've searched half a dozen houses either side of the one I found in the hope of finding them with a neighbour, but I think they may be with a relative elsewhere.

I do know that Eric Herbert Hughes is the son of Rose McGregor ( d/o Murray & Annie ) and Herbert Hughes as Eric died once he came to Canada and I have his death from ancestry and his burial proof . In Nov 1914 , Rose and her 4 children left England for Quebec . From my limited access to the census on findmypast , I found Marjory Hughes b 1908 in West Derby ( correct place ) but of course I don't know who she is with but maybe that is the one I am looking for
Thanks
Gayle
