Engel from India to Australia
« on: Thursday 02 December 10 01:56 GMT (UK) »
Stuck...Can anyone help in anyway....Researching Bernard James ENGEL b. abt 1893 married Dorothea Annie VICK 3 Aug 1914 Adelaide.
I believe his parents could be Harry (Henry) Michael ENGEL d.29 Aug 1943 Sefton Pk, SA and Edith SHENTON d. 30 Aug 1932 Sefton Pk, SA. This is only from a newspaper source can't seem to locate Birth details for Bernard on Digger.
Family ledgend is that Bernards father and mother came to Australia from India. His father sent his boys abroad and some went to America. Legend is also that he was Jewish and married a christian Indian.
Does anyone know how to get information about ship arrivals from India? been trying all the German and English passenger lists. Or births in india. Thank you :-\

Hi

Ancestry has a marriage between Hy Michl ENGEL and Shenton Edith FREEMAN in 1889 in Victoria Reg No 2189

Ancestry also has 2 births for this couple, no sign of a Bernard

Beatrice Lilian ENGEL 1901 Collingwood Victoria Reg No 10209
Kate Susie ENGEL 1890 Richmond Victoria Reg No 7084

If you are looking for passenger lists from India look for ships that came from the UK, depending upon which route they took some called into India but passenger indexes often show where the ship originated not where a passenger boarded, you need to look at actual passenger lists to see port of embarkation

Thank you for looking for me. I will follow up the Victorian link. Maybe they moved to South Australia? Is there any where that recorded families moving from State to State? I have a death notice for Edith Shenton Engel with her husband stated as Henry Michael and all the grandchildren are listed. My mistake was thinking Shenton was her maiden name so you have given me more to consider.
Thank you and have a lovely christmas ;D

Hi,

Further to Andy’s post of 2 December on the Federation Index of Births, Deaths and Marriages 1889 - 1901 for Victoria

Edith Shenton Freeman lists her place of birth as India and Henry Michael Engel states that he was born At Sea as part of their marriage registration

Beatrice Lilian Engel died 1901, in Collingwood, Reg#5307

You can download the marriage certificate for $17.50 (Andy has provided you with the registration number), the marriage certificate will have the parents names of both the bride and groom:

Please also find a link to Victorian Public Records Office where you can look up Passenger Arrivals for the State of Victoria.

Cheers,

Janet.

Hi,

Not sure if this is any use to you, on the National Archives of Australia website there is a 64 page digitised Australian Defence Forces Personnel Record for a Gelson Henry Frederick Engel born in Poona, India, also but not digitised, the Naturalisation Record of Henry Engel that you will be able to send off to NAA for a photocopy.

Hi. Just got your msg.  I will check my records tomorrow and let you know what I have . I am in Queensland Australia and it's late at the moment, so I thought I should check where you are from before calling. Do you have an email address? That way I can just send you information.

All the best
