Hi guys, not sure if this is her or not as it is a census from St Croix, Virgin Islands, interesting her though as it also has a (in separate household) Isabella James.

Is St Croix the same as West Indies? Does say Danish West Indies (today known as US Virgin Islands)

In the household of Thomas Williams

ref: Rigskarviet, 1870 St Croix Census

Henrietta James 46 Chief, Washer b. St Croix, unmarried

living in 55 King St - 1911 Virgin Islands, US

Isabella James b. St Croix 80 widow

Thanks for your post, but based on Henrietta's DOB of1869, this wouldn't be her.  I will keep looking...and hopefully will turn something up!

On the plus side I have now found the marriage details for her mother and father (Nova Scotia) and a reference to a brother who I believe died in infancy. I think Henrietta's mother may have been a nurse in the British army, being stationed in Halifax when she married Patrick in 1864. Anyone have any ideas where I might follow-up on this?

Hi all,

All of this is fascinating to me - I'm fairly new to genealogy and have discovered that my great great grandmother Elizabeth was born in the West Indies (according to one census) or India (according to another). Her husband Lawrence Durkin was in the "Indian Army" according to a relative.

I've tried for ages to find out more but with no success. Would any of you be kind enough to have a glance through the records you mention above to see if anything matches the following information?

Lawrence Durkin was born in Ireland in ~1862, and was in the "Indian Army".
Elizabeth his wife was born in the West Indies/India depending on which census I look at, in ~1862.
By 1884 they had moved to Darwen in Lancashire, England, where they had their childen Henry (my great grandfather), Patrick, Bridget and Mary Ann.

If anyone could give me any advice or help finding out more about Lawrence and Elizabeth I would be extremely grateful!

Regards,

Sean Durkin.
