Watsons of Saughton
« on: Tuesday 30 November 10 07:10 GMT (UK) »
Hi
Does anyone know much about this family?

I have a Jonet Heriot marrying a James Watson- portioner of Saughton in 1623 and there is mention of a marriage contract which saw certain lands of the Watson family being invested in her.

I do not know anything more about James- other than his mother was Anna Douglas.

THe only child I have found of the marriage is a son Robert born 1645 in Corstophine.

Can anyone tell me anything more about the Watson family, or about Jonet and James specifically? I would like to know what the lands were that went to Jonet, and what happened to them after her death. I would also like to know more about her husband James.

Thanks!!
Kylie B

I too have been trying to sort out this family, and their connections with the Douglas family.

Here is where I have got to: http://www.douglashistory.co.uk/famgen/getperson.php?personID=I19787&tree=tree1

I would like to know how your James fits in with what I have.

William

Hi Kylie

I can't see anything about Jonet HERIOT and James WATSON specifically but here are some mentions of a WATSON family in the vicinity which they're very likely to be part of.
(Edited from “Gorgie and Dalry” by Malcolm Cant):

“The lands of Saughton were held by the Abbey of Holyroodhouse until the end of the 16thC.  Thereafter divided between various proprietors up to the mid 17thC, well known family names appearing in the records include WATSON, MORISON and DALZELL.  William WATSON and his descendants were a family frequently involved in disputes and litigation.  William in trouble with the authorities for being absent from army musters of 1544 and 1546.  In 1569 his son James fell out with the THOMSON family over failure to pay a loan and same year lost an action against Johnne STANEHOPE, the miller at Stenhouse, for the supply of oatmeal.  A few months later James won a case against the THOMSONs who were found guilty of carrying off WATSON’s livestock “under silence of nyght”.  In 1590, the third generation, John, following a land transaction with John COUTTS of Dalry, was severely reprimanded by the Kirk Session of St Cuthbert’s.
Between 1600 and 1650 the lands of Saughton had various owners, MORISON family took over from John WATSON and John DALZELL.  MORISONs then sold the lands to Thomas MOODIE of Dalry in 1639.  In 1660 Moodie’s daughter sold Saughton to Robert BAIRD, merchant and baillie in Edinburgh”.

Probably not much help, but it gives a flavour of the times!

Anne

Hi Anne and William

I like the bit about 'under silence of nyght' Anne- thats straight out of Rob Roy or Braveheart...very funny though I suppose not for the Watson who lost their cattle!

William- as best I can guess the James Watson you have dying unmarried in 1764 must be a descendant of my James Watson and Jonet.

I have not been able to track down any more children for the couple- or indeed either of their deaths, so I have little to go on to trace them forward in history again.

Will keep looking!
Kylie
