St. Thomas Churchyard, Stockton Heath, Warrington
« on: Tuesday 30 November 10 02:56 GMT (UK) »
My ancestors, the Coopers and the Risleys, were Christened, married and buried at St. Thomas.  I would be very grateful if someone could take some photographs of the gravemarkers for me. I have emailed the churchwarden asking for information but have not heard back and  have requested on several websites but with no luck.    Please help me with this.
thanking you,
Marion

Can you confirm that all graves involved have headstones

Do you have the grave numbers - death dates etc

Carole, Thank you for your reply.
I  emailed one of the churchwardens about 5 weeks ago and have emailed another just today so still hoping for a reply.  The only information I have at the moment is the obituary of my Great Grandfather, Frank Cooper who was interred at the churchyard on 13 February, 1931.  He even went to school at St Thomas School. His father, John Cooper died 1910 (second quarter) with his wife, Mary dying in 1913 (also second quarter).  However I cannot confirm that they were buried there. The Cooper family lived in Appleton on Mill Lane.

I would have thought they would have had the courtesy to reply to your emails by now - let's hope you get a response to your latest ones

The reason for my questions above is that many churchyards and cemetaries have been subjected to the dreaded "Health & Safety" checks which have resulted in very large numbers of headstones being removed as "unsafe"

If there is no record on file of a living family member to notify - the grave just becomes overgrown which can make looking for it quite difficult.

Hello Carole,

I live in south Carolina now and often I have commented about some the gravestones in the old cemeteries here, how it would be nice to straighten them as many of them are at 45 degree angles and worse, just hanging on.  My husband said people won't adjust them as they think it would be disturbing the dead.  There are a couple of old cemeteries in town and the old graves have just been left for the weeds to take over.  It is so sad as they are lovely old ones with  marble surrounds, family plots.  I'm trying to build on just dates and places but it's just me now so what I can find on line in precious.

I knew that some gravestones had been laid over flat on the ground or laid against a wall but didn't know that they had been disposed of.

Thanks again for your email.
