Help please- Malone
« on: Monday 29 November 10 03:09 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

My husbands Gt Grandmother Mary McGibbon,b. abt 1840,
once wrote in an account book that she was born in County Clare and her name was really MALONE.

Mary was thought by the family to be born in 1843, Stirling, Scotland.
Her death certificate says she was 83 when she died in Qld, Australia in 1923 which would mean she was born in 1840 as she said.

Her supposed parents were Catherine McPherson and Thomas McGibbon.

It seems her own parents died and she was adopted by Thomas and Catherine.  She did however have a sister Bridget, name on the 1861 Scotland census as living with her and her husband Peter McGregor, both women state they were born in Ireland and give the name Malone.

I have tried to find records for births in County Clare also what happened to Bridget when Mary left for Australia in 1862 but have had no success.

Can any one help please?.
Marybeth44 :)

Full civil registration started in Ireland in 1864, and to check for earlier details (e.g. baptisms) you need to research parish records. Two details are essential for this research - the family religion, and their location (ideally parish or townland).

see : Introduction to Irish Records

Researching Clare ancestors is extremely difficult pre civil registration as the church records are not online. Have a look at the genealogy section of www.clarelibrary.ie ad see if you can find anything useful.

Re: Help please- Malone -- not likely to be from Carrigaholt area.

In the Carrigaholt Catholic Registers from 1852-1878, there is only one reference to MALONE :
Baptised on : FEBRUARY 4th 1858   MARY FENNELL from KILKEE
Parents : Tom FENNELL & BIDY GORMAN
Sponsors : Tom Malone & as Ellon, Ellen Malone
Revd P Meehan

While these registers only covered the extreme southwest of Co.Clare, almost up to, but NOT including Kilkee or Kilrush towns, ---- a few baptisms like this one occurred when the local mother and/or father returned 'home' to give birth.   Fennell & Gorman are common local names to Carrigaholt.

I would infer from this, that the Malone couple, as sponsors, were from the Kilkee town or area, because I have studied well the areas south from here, the few miles to Carrigaholt, and there were no other references to Malone.

I'm sending this note just so you can 'cross Carrigaholt off your list' and concentrate elsewhere?
GINNANE , GUINNANE, GUINANE, GINANE, GUINANNE of Rahona East, Carrigaholt, Co.Clare;   or of Coney Island, or Fergus River areas.
CONNOR MURRAY of Rahona East;
Mac an Gowan or Guinane / Ginnane / Genane / Gaynor / Ghabhainn / Smith of Borrisokane, north west Co.Tipperary [before 1650].
Hanley from Kildorrery, Co.Cork; Downey from Shraharla, Co.Limerick.
Deamer, Lane, Manning from Hitchin, Hertfordshire.
Peter Nils Harder from Naestved, Sjaelland, Denmark [ and later Westport, NZ].
