Where did my Helleur's come from? *COMPLETED*
« on: Sunday 28 November 10 10:09 GMT (UK) »
My grandfather was Etienne George Helleur, he died in NZ about 1958. That's all I know about him really except that he helped build the Mickey Savage Memorial on Auckland's waterfront. Does anyone have anymoe background please?

Hello and welcome!

Having searched for Helleur on the UK censuses I found them exclusively living in the Channel Islands, mainly Jersey but one family in Guernsey also.

Here's a list of how many individuals are indexed on each year's census:

1841 - 4 in Jersey
1851 - 15 total in Jersey and Guernsey
1861 - 10 in Jersey
1871 - 33 Jersey
1881 - 37 Jersey
1891 - 40 Jersey
1901 - 35 Jersey

None of them are named Etienne and some have De Helleur rather than Helleur as surname.  I'm researching the Hellyer name which is more common and means roofer or tiler.

Etienne may have been born in NZ or elsewhere but it seems the family roots may well be in the Channel Islands.

If you have a look at BDM;s you will find his birth in NZ along with 9 siblings, there may have been more as the cut off for historical births is todays date 1910.

His parents marriage

His father's birth
