I would like to reply to donnamariacarlin who is doing her Masters on William Carroll. I live in South Africa and my Grandmother was May Gertrude Carroll his granddaughter, daughter of John Simon Carroll. My grandmother died in1969 and my sister and I are interested in finding out more about our Irish roots.
We would love to receive any information.
 Thanks

Thank you I was quite excited to receive your reply. We have very little information on my grandmothers family.  Her correct name was Mary Gertrude Carroll but my grandfather called her May.  We always understood her birthdate to be 16th October 1880.She came here in October 1902 to marry my grandfather who had come out from Ireland in 1899 and was a veterinary surgeon during the British Boer war. From her meagre scrapbook/journal I have found envelopes and one letter he wrote her giving various addresses in Dublin  and I think I found reference to her in the 1901 census together with her sister and maternal grandmother. In the journal is an undated newspaper cutting referring to her uncle Dr William Joseph Carroll"s death in Australia and another uncle who was at his bedside S.J Carroll. It mentions that Dr W.J was the second son of Sir William Carroll and born in 1854 and 42 when he died which makes the year 1896.  I  have the  book for  "Right Honorable William Carroll 1868 Visitors to The Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress " which was passed on to my father. I do not know who Lady Carroll was ! Hopefully we will over time be able to learn more and I look forward to receiving whatever information you can share with me

Hi AgnesV and donnamariacarlin

I am trying to prove that the wife of John S. CARROLL is actually the sister of my great-grandfather, Francis Joseph FitzPatrick. An item in the Nenagh Guardian 1838-2010 Wednesday May 04, 1870 page 2 states:
MARRIAGES
May 3, at Rathgar, John S., eldest son of Sir Wm. Carroll, 33 Upper Fitzwillim-street (sic), Dublin, to Mamie Eliza, second daughter of Samuel Fitzpatrick, Esq., of Vista, Rathgar.

I base this on a personal history which was written for Francis Joseph FitzPatrick (Samuel's second son) in which he stated that he had a sister who married a Lord Mayor of Dublin and died of smallpox. Now I cannot find a Lord Mayor who married a FITZPATRICK but John S. may qualify as he is the SON of a Lord Mayor.  There is no mention of the names for either of his two other brothers or his four sisters in the report.

As for William Joseph CARROLL, I cannot find when  came to Oz, but he married Ada Agnes HUDSON in 1881 at Corowa, NSW. Cannot get an exact date for when he died but it was before 5/8/1916 when his son William Hudson died in WW1 in France, as the description says - the late Dr W J Carroll and Late Sir William Carroll, Dublin.

Something else I came across is that Maude-Elizabeth, eldest daughter of Doctor Sir William CARROLL, J.P., married in 1867, Doctor Francis John Boxwell QUINLAN (b. 9/05/1834) and
an item in the South Australia Register (newspaper) of Monday 25/11/1889.
CARROLL - FREUDENBERG - On the 10th October at St Peter's Church, Surry Hills, Sydney, NSW, by the Rev. E.M. O'Brien. P.Stanislaus, youngest son of Sir William Carroll, M.D., J.P., Dublin to Elenora Augusta, youngest daughter of Mr J.F. Freudenberg, Adelaide. SA.  The NSW BDM entry for that marriage is number 1457/1889 Patrick S. CARROLL to Elenora FRENDENBERG at Sydney.

Freeman's journal & Daily Commercial Advertiser, Wed, May 4th, 1870 has an extra snippet re the marriage that may help ie.

".... John S eldest son of Sir William Carroll, MD, JP, TC of No 33 Upper Fitzwilliam St to Mary Eliza, second daughter of Samuel F Fitzpatrick, Esq, of Vista, Rathgar and grandaughter of the late Edmund Fitzpatrick, Solicitor, of St John's and Enniscorthy, in the County Wexford, and Rathduff, County Carlow".

Note it's "Mary" not "Mamie" in this report.

Thank you hanes teulu. Your reply has clarified my newspaper reference and given so much more by qualifying Samuel and mentioning the grandfather (Edmond, a solicitor). With this info I can be fairly sure that two families I have been trying to tie together for quite some time do indeed come from brothers - Samuel Foley FitzPatrick and Francis Johnston FitzPatrick. You will notice that there is a capital P in the surname which is a rather 'unique feature' but is not always written as such.

Woooo Hooooo I am very happy!!!!

Hi Tony F,  John S Carroll and Mary Elizabeth Carroll nee Fitz patrick were my Grandmother,  Mary Gertrude Carroll"s parents. I have recently obtained a copy of her birth certificate.  We have wondered why my grandmother never  spoke of her family and now know how her mother died. My aunt , daughter of Mary Gertrude, was Mary Elizabeth , known as Maimie and My father had Fitzpatrick as one of his names. John S was a city marshall and the address on the birth certificate was 50 Rutland Square W, Dublin.
I have two photos of, I think , my fathers' Fitzpatrick great grandparents. I am looking for a reference. Also some pictures in my grandmothers journal are unidentified.
Donnamariacarlin sent me information about the Carroll family which I am busy tying up with my information. This also relates to the Australian family.
There is quite a bit to sort through!
