William John GREY Marriage look-up, New South Wales
« on: Saturday 27 November 10 12:12 GMT (UK) »
Could someone kindly help me to find the marriage of William John Grey between 1911 and 1920 possibly in Sydney.  William John was born abt 1890 in Swansea, Wales UK.
Bride was Margaret Ina ........ sorry, surname unknown.  She was born abt 1891 in Australia, probably New South Wales (Sydney?)
I live in England and would be delighted if someone could help

Hi Buona

This may be the marriage you are looking for - 7324/1917 William J Gray/Margaret I Dann at Wickham

You can search the indexes yourself, they are online.  If you want to get a copy of the marriage there are contact details on the homepage for Transcription Agents.  Much cheaper than getting the certificates and have the same information.

Hi Cazay,

Thank you for such a speedy reply and the marriage information.  I am thrilled with it and am sure it is the correct one.

I had already searched the records myself but kept coming up with no matches.  I assumed this was because I did not know the bride's surname.  Since reading your post, however, I have been back to search the records using the bride's surname but I still keep coming up with no matches.  I am obviously doing something wrong but I have no idea what - I shall keep trying and maybe practice will make perfect!!

One further question if I may, could you kindly tell me whereabouts Wickham is please?

Many thanks for your help and expertise

Hi there,

When using the indexes just make sure you use a "wildcard* in your search to pick up the instances of misspellings.  In this case the marriage is under the surname GRAY not GREY, so searching for GR*Y should give you better search results.  On the NSW index you can use the wildcard * to replace letters in any part of the name.

I think this may be her birth:

1891 Ina M Dann
Parents:  Frederick J Dann and Eliza J
Maitland. East, New South Wales
Registration Number: 20668

Wickham is a suburb of Newcastle and Maitland is a town quite close to Newcastle.

Lots of births shown with same parents, registered at East or West Maitland
1885 Eva M
1887  Mabel L
1889 Horace
1893 Ethel D
1895 Hugh H
1903 Eveline D
1906  Elsie
1899 Arthur

And this looks like the marriage:
1884 Frederick J DANN  Eliza J SEEDS  registered at MORPETH 5838

Morpeth is in the same area as Maitland and Newcastle.
Judith
DYER - Wilts, London, Somerset, MIDLANE - Hants, Wilts, SONE - Hants, WRIGHT - London, Hants, SEAGER - Deptford, DWYER, FERGUSON - Victoria, MASON - Woodford Vic, BALLARD - South Wales, GOULDBY - Lowestoft

Hi there,

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,369703.0.html  has lots of links for the Christ Church Cathedral of Newcastle's bdm records ... including ones from their outlying areas ...  Sometimes there's even family pages with the various births recorded too.

Another tip re NSW BDM records,  you can click on the headings of each of those indexes to sort each column into different order from the displayed one.

Fingers crossed...

Cheers JM

Hi Dundee, judb and majm,

Wow! Thanks everyone for all this information, especially the birth of Margaret I and all her siblings - quite a large family.  Must be lots of relatives out there that my husband doesn't know about.

I am grateful for the advice re searching the indexes.  I have had another go but am still coming up with no matches even though I enter all the information you have provided - and used a wild card  ???
This is the URL of the search I am using -  is it the correct one?
http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/Index/IndexingOrder.cgi/search?event=births
I would be grateful if you could help me to get this sorted as I obviously have a lot more searches to make now all this "extra" family has been found.

Thrilled with the advice re Christ Church Cathedral bmd's but haven't yet had time to access the records - fingers crossed I will succeed there!
Very grateful,
buona
