Wexford bar in William street

Hi I'm trying to find out about a very small bar which was situated on the right hand side of William street as you are going out of the town. The bar was basically the front room of a small terrace house. I think the bar may have been owned by a relative of a very good friend of mine who is 92. He would love to know any details about it.

It is probably Brady's - now a bit bigger. I think it might have been Purcells but I am sure Shellback will correct me.

Sorry I have misled you the bar was on the left hand side going out of Wexford it was part of a row of terraced houses

My Mother who lived in Maudlintown in the 1940/1950 era recalls the following

Leaving the town on the left hand side of William St (past the bottom of Fishers Row) there were three small houses that sold goods:

A sweet Shop - run by a man called "Ennis", next door was "Maggie Johnsons" who sold apples and further up the street a small bar known as "Alfie Kerfoots".

These names are how they sounded and may not be spelt correctly.

Alfred Kerfoot (then aged 2) was living with his Mother Margaret in William St. Her occupation is 'Shop Keeper' although on the Household & Building return it states their dwelling as "Public House'.

At that time it was the only Public House in William Street - it looks like Alfie remained at the property and carried on the trade.

The bar in question was Margaret Anne Kerfoots. After Margaret Ann's day it was run by her nephew Larry Grannell. It was,as Shorts said, in the front room of a two up, two down terrace house.During the 60s when Larry wass hospitalised the customers ran the bar themselves, for about 6 or 7 months and not as much as a. penny went astray. I often had a drink there on the way to catch the train for Rosslare. Some shipmates lived nearby and we all met up in mARGAret Anne's. The remnants of the sign is still over the door although it is now a dwelling house

I forgot to mention I knew two Alfie Kerfoots there.Father and son, perhaps?.

I knew that shagger would have the information. He really needs to write a book about his memories of Wexford before he falls over and forgets it all.

Here are two lists of ratepayers (heads of Household) resident in William Street in 1936. Some of the names mentioned in the posts above appear in the lists.

The first is those assenting to a proposal on the local Water Supply
The second is those in opposition to a loan for a new town hall
