William Leslie Street on Moreton Island
« on: Saturday 27 November 10 07:40 GMT (UK) »
I would like to know the background information on William Leslie who had a street named after him on Moreton Island off Brisbane.  I think it is in Cowan Cowan area.

Looking forward to hearing your ideas.

....May I suggest you contact the Brisbane City Council......   they may have had a councillor of that name ... or know of a particular 'pioneer' of that district worthy of having a particular street named after him.  Valerie (WA)

Butterlily,

You could try the "ask a librarian" at the State Library of Queensland,

I have been into the Library on many occasions and they all have been very helpful.

Just having a look around the newsapers, I think it may have been named after Patrick LESLIE's father.  William and his sons owned land around Moreton Bay, but I don't think that William himself was ever in Australia.

Patrick LESLIE http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrick_Leslie

"Leslie was elected as member of the NSW Legislative Assembly for the seat of Moreton, Wide Bay, Burnett and Maranoa from 19 November to 19 December 1857. He was also the leader of the Moreton Bay separatist movement, presiding over the first public meeting held at Drayton to press this issue."

Good suggestion by Valerie, as most councils can tell you where their street and area names originated.
