Thorpe Family Ties

I was searching for info on my great great great (and so on) grandfather.

His name is James Thorpe, very little is known about him.

I found this blog:

I am descended from the Thorpe family, my grt grandfather was Edmund Thorpe bn 1838.
He was the brother of James Thorpe bn 1851 who was the grandfather of Sylvester Thorpe who married John Harris.
I only have 2 children in the 1901 census , Mark 1900 and John 1900.
I have John Harris as having  4 siblings Arthur , Reuben who married Alice Lamb, Euphemia who married  Hiram Wilson and Rodney

I think the James Thorpe you refer to is the James Thorpe b.cir 1816 married Elizabeth Butteris/Buttress/Butteridge. She was sister of Rebecca who married one of the Herons and had a daughter Rhoda who was brought up by James Thorpe and his family (as is born out by census returns).

A John Gray was bpt in 1817 at Comberton Camb s/o James Thorpe and Silvesta Gray (and here is one of the clues to finding your Thorpes - the Grays and Thorpes intermarried a few times, and had an annoying habit of changing surnames at will often inexplicably)

Silva Gray was c.1793 Orwell d/o Fuke & Mary (this is Fowk/Fuke/Founess and other spellings) Fuke appears to be a Gray - his wife was Mary Thorpe (or Tharp).

Which may explain why Sylvesta Thorpe married a John Smith in Haddenham Cam in 1813. So what was the REAL name of "James Thorpe"? and Im afraid the answer is, I dont know.

i have thorpes in my family,liverpool very early 1800s and then later bethnal green.they were first of all willow weavers(basket makers)and then went on to chait bottoming and eventually in the 1900s to cabinet makers!!!!!!!!!!!!!there is talk in the family that they were jews who first came to liverpool and then moved on looking to better theirselves.jews like education and hence they had very late in life christenings so that they could attend higher education as jews were not given access to this.my thorpes maried into godfreys.dont know if that is any help?

Hi all 

Since asking for help on the Thorpes on the older thread you quote I have been in touch with my cousin, who, whilst not researching the thorpe side at the moment (she has done a huge amount on the Sherratts though - showmen, not Romany)  did send me more information on James Thorpe's son, also called James and his wife Elizabeth Sly. 

I am hoping to pick up on things again later in 2011. 

We are both descended from Jame's Jnr's daughter Sylvester/Slyve Thorpe.

I can tell you the Grays married into the Sly family as well.

Riley Gray married Lydia Sly 1809 Isleham Cam, it was their son Founess that married Constance Smith and had William Elias Gray in 1835 at Burrough Green Cams, who married Jane Bailey.

There is an earlier ref for a Sophia Gray marrying James Sly in 1785 at Oakington Cams, and their daughter Sophia married James Gray in 1803 at Teversham Cams. Sophia Gray and James Sly appear to be Lydia Slys parents as she was baptised at Barrington, Cam in 1790.
