Kidwelly/Lancaster/Wild Family

Does anyone know what the connection is between Kidwelly and Lancaster. According to Pigotts 1844 directory, Kidwelly is under the jurisdiction of the Duchy of Lancaster.

I think that the Joseph Wild I have found in Kidwelly in 1841 & 1851 is my ancestor who was born abt 1774 in Ashton under Lyne, Lancashire. But I am very unsure what would have taken him to Wales. He was dicharged from the Royal Horse Guards in 1814 and by 1817 was in Wales as his 4th (that I know of) child was born there. He was married in Sonning and had a daughter in Sonning and then a son (Joseph, my ancestor) in Windsor in 1812 (the Horse Guards were stationed in Windsor at that time).

I'm not 100% sure that I have the right family and if I could understand why they would move to Kidwelly I would be happier! Particulary as my ancestor (Joseph George Wild) seems to be the only one of his children that doesnt stay in Wales.

Kidwelly was in the Llanelly Registration District in Carmarthenshire

You say that your Joseph was b Lancashire - the 1841 Joseph is shown as aged 60 and  "born in county" (ie) Carmarthen but in 1851 he is shown as 76 and b Lancashire 

I would go with the 1851 entry - particularly as he is shown as a Chelsea Pensioner

Why he moved to Wales may stay a mystery!!

I'm pretty sure the 1841 is him too, the age is rounded as a lot of 1841 census' are & the county 'Y' is just an error I think.  Joseph & his children (& families) are the only Wilds in Kidwelly at this time.

I've just started researching my husband's family tree and Joseph Wild (the elder) is his ancestor too.  Have you been told the story about him having his horse shot from under him?  - is it true? and where documented?

Gosh - long time since I wrote this post but fortunately I seemed to have set an alert on it somehow!

Interesting your husband is descended through Joseph Wild too - yes I knew about the horse being shot from under him - its written in his Chelsea Pensioner Records - now on findmypast and ancestry.

I think the reason that Kidwelly was part of the Duchy of Lancaster was because at one time I believe it was owned by John of Gaunt, son of King Edward III, who was the Duke of Lancaster by right of his wife Blanche.

I've got a sub to FindMyPast but the Chelsea Pensioners' records aren't there.  Haven't got Ancestry.  Can a non-subscriber have access to your tree?  I looked on Public Trees and got nowhere.

Any help re access for this incompetent would be welcome!
